Mexico City lies in a great
hollow, scooped out of high
plateau country (7,500 ft.), and is
ringed on all sides by mountain
ridges, - so no matter how you
approach the city, you have to
climb up over the ridge and drop
down into the bowl.

As we jook to the north from
‘Las Quintas (our Cuernavaca
retreat) we.can see the toll road
winding back and forth along the
sides of the mountain ridge that
separates us from Mexico.

And, from our patio, we shift a
little to starboard in our vision
and, behold Mexico’s two famous
volcanoes: ‘‘Popo” and ‘‘Ixty”’,
breaking the skyline. It makes us
think of the old Aztec legend of
the. love affair. between
Popocatepetl y Ixtaccihuatl (or
‘Sleeping Lady’’ as she is called
by tourists who cannot pronounce
the full name). There she lies
stretched out.on her back ina
snow’white. ‘shroud along . the
wide-top mountain just as Popo
places her remorsefully after. he
had killed her ina fit of jealousy
so other. sutors could never defile:

~her......while far above her to the
right stands Popo, -tall and .im-
perious with his head-white in”
sorrow.and clutching his dagger
-at his: waist.
Perhaps the best vantage point
to view the fateful couple is from
the upper terrace of the Cortes:
. Palace,
' Ctiernavaca immediately below.
_and beyond for some 60 miles of .
~ intervening- barrancas. Both
- volcanoes are dormant | now.

Perhaps the second in line as.a
tourist attraction in Cuernavaca
is the Borda Gardens (Jardin
Borda), built the latter part of the
18th century by Manuel de la
Borda, son of the famous silver
miner, Jose, who exploited the
silver deposits” of Taxco and
Guanajuato earlier in the history
Manuel, himself

laid out as a retreat. The gardens
were. used extensively by
Maximilian and Carlotta in: the
1860s and were the site of many
important functions in the prime
of their glory. Nothing remains
now of the lustre of their. great-
ness but. plans are. on: foot: to
restore. them to their . former
glory.

Then-a few steps down Avenido
Hildago is the old: (and we mean
‘old - completed during the 1550s)
‘Cathedral which” sprawls. over
nearly a city block. The complex
contains numerous churches and
chapels, but ‘one ‘in- particular

St. Francis’; for it was here that
we were privileged to attend a
