SSpeEP ORE RAEI .PAGE TWELVE Wednesday, February But Weevils Put Thriving William Turner Out Of Business BY FREEMAN KING How many peninsula’ people ‘ realize there was once a thriving hop growing industry here? It goes back quite a few years -- Annual Meeting Held By Bible Society At the annual local meeting of the Canadian Bible Society, held on February 11 in Sidney .Foursquare Gospel Church, the district secretary, Rev. J. A. R. Tingley reported on the activities of the Society and showed a film illustrating the work in Latin America. ‘Local " secretary-treasurer, Mrs. C, Parnell was thanked for her efficient services..The Rev. Irene Smith officiated, Rev. Roy Millar led the prayers and: the scripture reading was. by. the Rev.. Hori. Pratt... Incoming president W. Hoskins closed the _ meeting with prayer. to. 1864 to be precise, when William Turner came to the ‘‘new world” from his native Kent in England and was. fascinated by the. Plantations. of hops ‘in California. _ He brought some “sets” with him to. Vancouver Island, and settled at Deep Cove where he started a farm. It was situated near the junc- tion of what. is now. known’ as Downey and West Saanich roads. The ‘‘sets’”’ of hops thrived and soon there were four oast houses, or drying kilns: for the ‘‘fruit.”’ The farm supplied the. old Phoenix Brewery in Victoria with hops needed in the brewing of beer, and also shipped to a ready market in California. The kilns were built of wood, plastered on the outside, unlike those in England which were built of brick. Inside. were large, wood- burning stoves. with pipes cir- culating heat through the The saga of the tugboat tussle _at_ Sidney. wharf. has. hada chapter added. David. Young, an employee of Holt. The hops had to be watched closely during the drying period. They had to be removed at just the right time of drying for a proper mix with the barley-made malt used in brewing. When the hops were dry, they were placed in ‘sacks called “pokes’'. and therein ‘lies the saying, '‘a pig in a poke.” The | pokes were about six feet long by three feet. Local native Indians were employed in picking the Deep Cove hops, just as they are today in the Fraser. Valley and Washington where the industry is widespread. — The growing of hops has been traced: back: to the Babylonian era. The plant is a member of the nettle family © (Humulus Lupulus):The young shoots make excellent table greens when cooked. The Deep Cove farm went out of business because of weevil infestation. Hops still can be seen growing wild here as climbers, but there are no commercial plantations. Chilliwack district has 950 acres in hops, under the control of the B. C.
