PAGE TEN SAANICH PENINSULA AND GULF ISLANDS REVIEW Wednesday, April 1, 1970 NORTH SAANICH CONCERT feat BY ROSEMARY OWEN “A case of virtue finding it’s own reward”’ was the explanation of Austin Scott, band conductor, for a notable improvement in the quality of musicianship displayed at. the. North Saanich Junior Secondary School band concert on March 26. “Both - bands have worked very hard, with particular emphasis on team work and intonation: I find the junior band particularly. rewarding as they ‘are fresh material with no preconceived faults to correct,’ he said. The Osling arrangement of ‘The Wood Chopper’ was made realistically effective by the grade 8 band with the use of claves and wood blocks, followed by ‘The Happy Bugler’ (Davis).in which the trumpet sectionearried the theme without the usual ~ breaks. associated with junior musicians of brief experience. TONAL QUALITY The senior band swept the audience into a rollicking mood with two sea chanties, and in contrast the theme from the film Roemo and Juliet. Here the flutes and clarinets shone in- tonal quality against a well balanced bass accompaniment. The challenging five-four timed arrangement of ‘Mission Im- possible’ was proven possible in the hands of this older group. ‘A Very Good Year’ (Drake) lacked the necessary joyous lilt and seemed to drag at times. The Junior band showed good control in handling the theme from the Haydn ‘Symphony in G, familiar to many as the hymn tune ‘St. Albans.’ An unrehearsed experiment. deploying trum- petters Evan Neeves and Gordon THE OAKS. Drums and saxophone (that bastard instrument, some purists term it!) led in a toe tapping syncopation with the senior band whose sense of timing is well developed. As their director mentioned, ‘‘all band music is written either for the dance or march and the precise definition of beat is essential.” The controversial ‘Aquarius’ taken from. the Tribal Rock Musical ‘Hair’ defeated the older group in a sticky start, but they were able to recover the difficult dissonant passages common to Announcers Pat Taylor and David Lawrence presented programme notes, with an in- teresting commentary preceding each number. — Don McKinnon, school prin- thanked the Parents’ Committee under Mrs. Alger for their faithful. daily service and home ‘cocking in the cafeteria, the proceeds from which help with an annual expense of $2,000 for instruments and music.
