Coleman: Memorial Fund, established in 1969 with the ultimate aim’ of building a medical clinic on Pender Island, will be used temporarily to create an ‘annual scholarship fora Pender Island university student. Funds collected so far will be invested, with a portion. of. the income each year to be awarded as the Bishop Michael Coleman ‘Memorial Scholarship, and the balance of the income to be ap- plied to the -fund’s — principal amount. This interim arrangement will continue until the need for a medical.clinic on the island is ‘more. apparent than it is at the present time. Since the fund was established, a resident doctor has moved to the island and. will practise from an office in his own house. Previously, when the sole medical care .available to islanders was provided by visiting doctors who treated patients in private homes, there was a distinct need for a central medical clinic. The’ fund’s .administrative committee feels - certain. that those who have given. so generously to the fund will ap- prove the creation of this scholar- ship. -While the fund” is - being -allowed to increase in value over a period of time, it will be making a worthwhile contribution to the ‘future’ of Pender Island’ s young people. - Washington, D. = was the first planned and created as a national capital. according | to the.
