IN TEN YEARS VANCOUVER (CP)—The offensive smell from.-British Columbia’s. pulp mills. may disappear in 10 or 12 vears as a result of research being carried out.now by scientists at the. B.C. Research Council. Dr. Alan McIntrve, head of the council's applied chemistry division, told a seminar recently that scientists know the chemical problem involved but are trying to reduce the chemistry of the odor situation: to something economically practical. One-fifth of the chemistry division’s effort is. directed at controlling air. pollution from pulp mills, Dr. Mcintyre said. He said that 20 vears ago oil refineries emitted a smell: as offensive. as that produced by pulp mills. About 15 years ago work began on. wavs ‘of elimi- nating it and now there is no odor nuisance even to next-door residents. He. said there “are four problems facing pulp mills in their efforts to curb air pollution. The first is that the mills can’t measure the gases they produce. “If you can’t. measure it vou can't control it,” he. said... ‘‘It’s like a car without a speedometer.
