Wednesday, April 29, 1970 Sanitary Regulations Now that standards for the operation of septic tanks and the installation of disposal field systems have been ‘put into writing by the Metropolitan Board of Health, all who are concerned will be aware that pollution from these sources is no longer to be tolerated. — In plain words, the homeowner will be required. to Patricia Bay Paddler By Dane Camphell - confine sewage effluent within the limits of his property,. and where percolation is unsatisfactory the only remedy. is construction of an above-ground earth fill disposal RUTH ENKE VIEWS system complete with either bell siphon or pump. Publication of the standards has a direct application to the forthcoming Sewer Bylaw referendum in Central Saanich, where the proportion of malfunctioning septic tanks is said to be abnormally high. Septic: tank problems are not confined: to older - dwellings. The local authority reveals that some in- stallations in new subdividions are no longer effective ~ because of ground. saturation, a condition prevalent through the use: of. modern electrical appliances. . He published letters from people who expressed appreciation for his stand on smoking. in air- planes. Ground is being gained for the recognition of the rights of non-smokers to have unpolluted air to breathe when travelling. It — seems that the second major air lines is doing something about it now. Bus travelling is bad in this way and in spite of no-smoking signs the stench very often is actually. sickening. I notice. a small start in’ ac- commodating the non-smoker has been made of the BC. Ferries. Their one large ferry has asmall section with a no-smoking sign. This ought to.be the case on all the ships and since there are on each ‘ship. several* distinct lounging “areas. it would . be comparatively easy to establish that.one or more of. these areas -are:for. non-smokers. Just the other day I was rudely - made award of the nastiness of “cheap'’ tobacco smoke, and | was haying lunch in a restaurant. But with: God’ shelp,. : every family proble me ~ ean’ he solved. more than two or three cigarette smokers do in a restaurant. We have many friends who smoke, and this plea is not in any way directed to them. They are, and so are most smokers every- where, quite thoughtful as to where and when they smoke. It is the -thoughtless arrogant type who blow smoke in one’s face, as if they were doing a favor in sharing their tobacco, who need to be controlled. It was ever thus, practically all our laws, by-laws, etc. are because of the few who are selfishly ignorant, rather than the great bulk of the people who are considerate of their neighbours and community. Since pollution is the ‘“‘topic of the day”’ itis perhaps a good time to press for more consideration for clean air in’ public con- veyances and eating places. Is this asking too much? Speak up if you agree that it is not. PARISH OF NORTH SAANICH ANGLICAN CHURCH . OF CANADA ST.
