EAGLE-FALCON DUEL OFF SIDNEY SPIT

Sportsmen were not the only

~ creatures hunting the big shallow

lagoon on this calm crisp winter
day. As our rubber boat skimmed
over the water toward. Sidney
Spit the grebes and murres dove

to safety in the sea's depth; the
widgeon and: maitlards jumped

‘into the sky and waved us a hasty

retreat: and the diminutive
bufflehead frantically paddled at
the water and furiously beat the
only just
managing to get airborne and
skim over the surface.

Twenty. feet above our heads,
watching _ this
frenzied action of the evading.

hunters - the peregrine falcon.

Displaying the same skill,
cunning and courage that made
the peregrine the treasured
falcon of medieval nobility, this
swift-winged two pound steel blue
fury calmly -kept her position.
The divers and fast. fliers were
ignored. Even the awkwardly re-
treating scoter and scaup ducks
were bypassed - probably
because they would be too heavy

to carry all the way back to
shore.

Bufflehead were the desired

prey and then only the smaller
female.

Flying  buffleheads were

‘veering off to the left and right.

Finally a small group started off
directly away from in front of our
boat.

Still the falcon waited.

Then, once the chosen prey was
clear of the water, and flying

--Memecrial Hall’ on Wednesday,

streamlined shape downwards,
rapidly gained speed in a shallow
dive, and levelled out her flight
only inches from the water.

About three quick flicks of her
wingtips and she was upon the
intended quarry.

As her powerful talons flashed
forward, the seemingly defence-
less prey flew directly into the
water. The talons grasped
futilely at the splash.

Thirty yards further on, a
second bufflehead was missed,
then a third.

The fourth strike found its
mark. and. a bufflehead was
carried 800 yards to a treeless
sandpit.

- ROUND TWO
The second phase of the battle

of the survival of the fittest now

came into play.

From a nearby perch, an
immature bald eagle had been
witnessing this event, and before

the falcon had landed, old Baldy.

was headed for the sandspit to try
for a free meal.

No sooner was the peregrine
seated on her pluming log when
the threat of the eagle forced her
into the air. With several
vigorous stoops and much kack-
ing, she managed-temporarily to

discourage her winged ad-

versary.

As she returned to the log, so
did Baldy and the attack was
renewed with even more vigor.
Two, three, then four hard stoops
were put in at: the eagle, but he
dismissed these quite casually

and even made a shallow dive at
some thing on the beach .on.the
opposite side of the sandbar to us.

After circling for a minute,
both birds flew off to neutral
corners, and neither returned to
the pluming log.

A half hour passed and. we
decided to investigate the log.

No bufflehead was there.
-Apparently during the com-
motion over the possession of the
meal, the bufflehead decided he
didn’t want. to get any further
involved, and walked back into
the sea.
