Research Farm
Officer Dies
At 58 Years

A stroke claimed the life. on
Monday night of William Robert
Orchard, 8735.East Saanich
Road, long-time member of the
Dominion Experimental Farm
staff at Saanichton.

One week ago, Mr. Orchard,
age 58, was recipient of a service
pin presented in a special
ceremony by Experimental
Farm chief Harry Andison. :

Born in Victoria, ‘Bill’? Or-
chard, as he was known to many
local residents, joined the
research station in 1950 as a plant
pathology specialist. Later, he
obtained his Masters’ degree in
nematology from the University
of Oregon.

Quring the war, he served in
the Army. and. was anti-aircraft
gunnery instructor during an
overseas stint.

Mr. Orchard was a member of
the Agricultural Institute of
Canada, B.C. Institute of
Agrologists, the . Canadian
Phytopathology. Society and the
Professional Institute of. Public
Service of Canada. He was also
past president of the Dogwood
Trailer Club of B.C., director of
the Thetis Lake Nature Society.

Survivors are his wife, Phyllis
Orchard, two sons, Robert and
Phillip. at. home, one ‘daughter,
Mrs. Douglas (Rolinda)
Alexander,. two grandsons and
one brother, Wilfrid Orchard. in

Funeral service will be held on
July 24 in St. Michael and. All
Angels. Church with Canon J.
Rogers officiating. Cremation
will follow and donations, in lieu
of flowers, are. requested ‘to be
sent’.to the. Pacific Centre for.

Four station wagons loaded
with 20 Brownies, three Guides
and four leaders plus their gear,
arrived at Camp Kingswood at
Elk Lake on July 10 for a three
day camp. This was the first half
of Sidney Brownies, many of
whom had never been to camp
before. The camp was known as
Charlie Brown's Camp and a flag
was hoisted by the Packies to
officially open camp.

Each Brownie was presented
with a camp hat made by the
leaders, to keep as a souvenir.
The. sixes were known as
Peanuts, Great Pumpkins, Red
Barons and Ail Stars: Each took
turns helping ‘‘Cookie,”’ setting
tables, cleaning up and. doing
dishes.

All the leaders were named
after characters from Charlie
Brown. The cook, who was Mrs.
R. Cannon from 2nd Cordova Bay
Pack, was. called Lucy; the
nurse, Mrs. E. Tonge,.2nd Sidney,
was ‘‘Snoopy,’’ Miss D. Aitken,
ond Sidney Assistant Tawny, was
Violet, and this correspondent

supervising, was known. as
Charlie Brown. The Guides who
were “‘Packies’’ were Cathy Ife
as Pig Pen, Pat Evans as Pep-

leaders refused to answer unless
they were ‘called. by their ap-
pointed names.

Time at camp was filled in with
hikes, songs, games and han-
dicrafts. Linda Tonge (Linus) got
quite a’ surprise oh Saturday as it
was her birthday, and it had to be
the biggest birthday party. she
has ever had. Cake and ice cream:
were supplied and shared by 27
people. She was caught in. the
Brownies. '‘‘private’ domain’’
without. being invited and the

Guides camping down the hill
from the Lodge. the Brownies
invited the girls and leaders to
come and join them and take
part. It turned out to be riotous
evening with both girls and
leaders proving to be good sports.
One Guide leader didn’t believe
Guides would use raw eggs in a
skit and found out that if she had
listened to them she wouldn't
have had a mess to clean up.
Sunday. morning the Guides
invited the Brownies to join in a
“Guides Own" church service.
The. little outdoor chapel was

decorated with wild flower¢ and.

it was really something to see 20
brown hats and 24 blue ones
sitting grouped around the open
air church.

Food disappeared much
quicker than seemed possible and
the leaders were kept on their
toes to ensure everyone got
enough to. eat,
