Wednesday, September 16, 1970 Indian Distress Disclosures indicating the deplorable state of housing on Saanich Peninsula Indian Reserves were heard at a meeting of the Tsartlip Band with officials of the Department of Indian Affairs on Thursday. — Purpose of the meeting was to explain the federal housing program, to which reference is made in the news columns of this paper. The outcome was an ex- pression of frustration and discontent which was voiced to the officials in no uncertain terms. - Band councillors did not hesitate to say that the policy - laid down by the Department in the recent White Paper -on Indian affairs is totally unacceptable. They claim ‘that federal ideals and directives for the purpose. of improving the status of the Indian people have no validity because they do not reflect their true aims and aspirations. - On the evidence of observation alone it must be agreed that housing conditions and sanitary arrangements in ~ some Reserve areas are intolerable in this day and age. Tsartlip Chief Philip Paul is right in pointing out that. integration of Indian children in the public schools system is pointless while such conditions exist. - New overtones were heard at last week’s meeting, when. the | younger element plainly stated that. more positive action will be taken unless the government changes its attitude toward the Indian people. _ They particularly resent any semblance of pa tronage, and claim the right to have the leading voice. in the working out of their own destiny. © _..Make no mistake: young leaders are emerging who: are capable of making themselves heard. Seataring Priest At Anchor BY BERT GREEN East Anglian by birth and Anglican by persuasion, the Rev. Ivan Futter. has succeeded. the Rev.0.L. Foster as.Rector of the Saanichton churches — of. St. -Stephen and St. Mary. His wife, Brenda, and children David, 14, Deborah, 11, Catherine, 6, and Mark, 212 months, share the Rectory beside the secluded century-old church on Mount Newton Cross Road. With his luxuriant beard and weathered countenance the new Rector looks every inch a sailor, and indeed that was his calling for the major portion of his adult career. It may be said that he answered. the call of the sea before hearing ‘the’ call of the church. * DECK OFFICER “Born in the cathedral city of Norwich, England. Mr. Futter was educated at Queen Elizabeth -Grammar School for Boys and King Edward VII - Nautical College. He entered the mer- chant service as a cadet in 1946 and sailed in tramp ships to many parts of the world, visiting Newfoundland on his first voyage and becoming familiar with New Brunswick ports and Vancouver. Later he was a deck officer on the Canadian Pacific liner “Empress ‘of Britain.” Leaving. the sea, but not its -associations, Mr. Futter was for. _a.time the landlord-of The Ship Inn in the small yachting town ‘of Maldon, on the Blackwater River -eStuary in Essex, an interlude that preceded © studies at. the.
