BY ROSEMARY OWEN" Horses are back to school again after a lazy summer and the call has gone out from Victoria- Saanich Pony Club and. the Sunset Riders for members to report for instruction and play on almost every weekend from now until the New. Year. Young riders, ranging in age from eight to 18 years, . will emerge from pasture and stable to travel several miles to the training rings. All necessarily must use rural roads and secondary highways to reach their destinations. All are trained in road behaviour, as are their mounts. Many will travel in groups supervised by instructors, but. their numbers are growing and so is vehicular traffic. The Motor Vehicle Act makes no reference to horses ridden on highways other than to state that they ‘must not. be ridden furiously or raced’’. The Pony Club manual requires that riders keep to the right although many instructors feel that it would be safer to face the approaching traffic. Perhaps the rider’s threefold Anticipation and Courtesy .should-.apply equally to rider ‘and driver. Student riders are trained to maintain a ‘steady, pace in single file, using road verges. whenever possible and signalling any change of direc- tion. Should the horse show signs of getting out of hand the rider will immediately: dismount for better control. Drivers should be. -alert for a.signal to slow down or’: ‘Stop. Riders sometimes forget that visibility at dusk is greatly reduced for the. driver whose headlights will not pick up a horse with dark legs after sunset. Reflective tape on the stirrup irons would. reduce this hazard for the rider who miscalculates the distance to home. One driver still shudders when he recalls a recent incident when driving at dusk. On rounding a tree shaded corner he suddenly Spotted.a horse and rider in his path, took guick evasive action, and, as he puts it: ‘Blowed if there weren’t two more horses coming at me.on the other side of the road!’ These are the ingredients of tragedy!"'.
