News TheReview Wednesday, January 24,1990 — A21 ‘Heart Month starts early for Stelly’s ‘If they can be aware of themselves and their lifestyles now, the chances of eliminating the number one killer, heart disease, are greater a GETTING READY to put their hearts into charity are student volunteers of Sfelly’s HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION The timing of semester break @would have kept Stelly’s Seconda- ry students from collecting money for the B.C. and Yukon Heart Foundation. But schools co-ordinator Joanne Fraser of the foundation just didn’t have the heart to say no. So last Wednesday, a group ee spearheaded by the physical edu- cation 12 class carried on its tradition of helping the fund by canvassing in Central Saanich — a prelude to Heart Month, February, when the full fundraising cam- paign begins. “Tt really gives them a sense of community responsibility,” Fraser said. “I think it’s neat to have young people involved.” # She prepared about 25 Stelly’s students by showing them a short video and giving them canvassing kits. Fraser told students it’s not just old people who are affected by heart disease, “it’s young people and children, too.” It’s something she knows first- hand. Fraser has two children who were born with congenital heart disease. The video showed a child have a hole plugged with a tiny, umbrella- like piece that expands to stay in place in the heart. - Earlier procedures meant three to four weeks in hospital, and one ao Fraser’s children had heart sur- gery four times. The child on the video was in hospital one day. It’s that kind of medical advance the heart fund makes possible, Fraser said. And the fund is also largely responsible for her children being “healthy and well and active’’ today. A full 85 per cent of donations to the heart fund go to research and education. Helping collect that money each year are about 15 schools in Great- er Victoria. Parkland Secondary students will canvass in February. Last year, Stelly’s students raised about $400. Last Wednes- day, they more than doubled that. Fraser estimates the final figure will be at least $1,000. Secondary. At right is heart foundation schools co-ordinator Joanne Fraser. For student organizer Neil Fagan, canvassing is a way of helping pay back the heart fund for what it’s done for his family. Fraser’s children are his neph- ews, and he has a grandfather ““who’s in and out of hospital all the time with heart problems.” Adds the other student organiz- er, Gregg Shubak: “You get a good feeling out of it. You feel like you’re helping out in one small way.” Fraser thinks student involve- ment also helps erase myths about heart disease. “Tf they can be aware of them- selves and their lifestyles now, the chances of eliminating the number one killer, heart disease, are great- er,” she says. yore Capital GLASS & UPHOLSTERY ICBC CLAIMS PROMTLY HANDLED CALL US FOR: WINDSHIELD REPAIR & REPLACEMENT AND ALL YOUR GLASS NEEDS 656-1313 IST CLASS MARINA Consider our guaranteed permanent moorage to 2018 AD.
