News TheReview Wednesday, January 24,1990 — B2 Rome wasn’t built in a day; neither was the whale museum What if you opened a whale museum and most of the shelves were bare? Sidney council doesn’t want to find out, it decided Mon- day night. But a $75,000 provisional budg- et for exhibits is too rich an injection for Ald. John Calder. STAN BAMFORD And an original request of $111,000 by the museum’s curator was even further out of line, Cal- der told council Monday. “TI believe that was too much for a new facility. Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Calder said. But even after the cut, “I still think that’s too much.” However Ald. Stan Bamford noted that the museum has been a few days in the building. The town first applied for an Expo legacy grant in December 1986. “More than three years later it still isn’t open. I think it’s time to bite the bullet and get on with Mts Calder said the provisional exhibit budget for the expanded museum can’t be looked at with- out considering its operating budg- et, too. The expanded museum at the foot of Beacon Avenue will now house marine mammal exhibits as well as historical exhibits. Calder said he could support an earlier anticipated figure of $60,000. Calder said council has already committed “tens of thousands of dollars”’ to its 1990 budget. ‘More than three years later if still isn’t open. | think it’s time to bife the bullet and gef on with if? -Ald. Stan Bamford But other aldermen noted the exhibit budget was provisional Only. “We might talk you into it at budget time,” Ald. Herb Addison said. Meanwhile, Sidney Mayor Nor- ma Sealey voiced her opposition to the museum’s new name. She and Ald. Bob Jones voted against the name Sidney Museum - Marine Mammal and Historical. “1 still think the name whale should be in there,” Sealey said, “tegardless of whether Friday Harbor likes it.” B Coupon good only at ff Victoria, Nanaimo and Courtenay BONANZA Family Restaurants.
