Stop smoking campaign reaches thai fowl day

A stop smoking campaign pro-
moted by the Saanich Peninsula
unit of the Canadian Cancer
Society is taking off, organizers
said.

There will be no smoking by
staff at one Sidney drug store after
this week, Cancer Society spokes-
man Rita Kipot said.

Four or five smokers who work
at the Pharmasave said they will
quit smoking and plan to put their
hames on empty cigarette pack-
ages to enter into a draw for free
turkeys, being offered by several
grocers.

Tommy Tuckers restaurant in
Sidney is also jumping on the
butt-less bandwagon.

Not only will the restaurant
serve turkey today, but all smoking
will be banned from smoking
designated areas today only, Kipot
said.

Kipot was also happy to hear
that two Pharmasave stores in the
province have taken a firm stand
against smoking by deciding to
stop selling packages of cigarettes.

She emphasizes that banning
smoking is a forceful way to make
people quit. But promoting non-
smoking is a more positive — and

effective — way to encourage
smokers to quit.

National Non-Smoking Week is
all this week and today is Cold
Turkey Day, in which the cancer
society asks all smokers to abstain
for one day.

Boxes have been placed in sev-
eral local grocery stores for quit-
ters to enter their last empty pack
of cigarettes in.

People needing encouragement
to quit smoking can call the Penin-
sula unit at 655-1311.

Pamphlets with tips on how to
quit smoking are also available
from the unit office.
