TheReyiew Wednesday, January 31,1990 — A7 Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another in our continuing series of Healthy Living in Hectic Times, brought to you live and in living color by the makers of All Bran cigarettes, the smoke that deflates cholesterol as you inflate your lungs. As you can see, today we are on the furniture floor of a major department store: More specifically, we are smack in the middle of its squishy soft relaxing chair section. I have with me Ralph Oversight, a customer searching for a bargain and a man who describes himself as a professional relaxer. Isn't that right Mr. Over- sight? “You got it big guy.” Mr. Oversight told me ... “Hey, call me Ralph. I don’t need none of that Mr. stuff. Don’t know who you're talkin” about. You know?” OK Mr., 1 mean, Ralph. Now, Ralph told me that he watches a bit of TV at home and, for healthy viewing, it is important while supine to be aware of one’s cardiovascular and respiratory require- ments. “T said you gotta be comfy in front of TV.” And to do that you need a proper chair. “Right, and that’s why I was prowling around here before you came along and started talkin’.~ Ralph can you tell the folks watching us what you look for in a TV chair? “Yeah, sure. See, | got a chair at home. It’s my third one in five years but I use it a lot, you know, what with the NFL, CFL, NHL, WJHL, CSL, AL, NL, WLA, NBA and the other one with four letters, plus Dallas and the soaps and then the wife always wants a movie or two from the video shop when there’s nothing good on. “T started with one of those chairs that when you push on the arms a board bangs against your legs and you fall back. Lasted a week.” No good, eh? “Naw. It had only two positions — straight up and flat back. Couldn’t see the TV for my toes. Then I got one with more positions but it faced in Shaping up inthe 1990s thing and I didn’t quite get it, | had to twist around to answer or yell at her real loud. And that’s not healthy or relaxing, you know?” Right. “So then I got one that swivels and tilts. Then when she said something, I just pushed it around til I faced her and we talked.” Sounds as though you solved your problems. Why are you looking for another chair. “Two reasons. One — when I pushed to swivel I almost always pushed on the TV table which is kind of flimsy and would tip and the chips and beer and stuff would go all over And two — they’ve come up with some pretty nifty chairs in the last year and I wanted to look them over. “Tike this one here with the push-button controls to regulate all positions. It’s got a swivel switch so you don’t have to push on anything. These refrigerated side pockets will hold a six pack easy. “Push this button and a tray, with a slot for your glass, unfolds from one arm; the TV controls are built into the other arm so you're not always looking for them; the pillow can be puffed up or made smaller by this dial.” Is that a telephone hanging there? “Yeah, and the foam under the leather changes shape like a ski boot to fit the body on top. And look, here’s a seat belt to hold you in case you fall asleep and try to roll over.” Ladies and and gentlemen, as you can See Ralph has decided to test fly the chair and is adjusting the recliner buttons. The foam is shifting to conform to his shape and his fingers are flicking over the TV controls as he fine tunes that set in the far corner of the store. “L22222222..”" Well folks it looks as though Ralph has found his chair and it’s time to say, “So long,” from Healthy Living in Hectic Times. Next week we'll discuss the benefits of horizontal walking. Until then, remember, pull deeply on an All Bran and watch the pounds melt away. “ZLLLZLIZ."
