Ae Re a A Sa Se a er ee Re News TheReview Wednesday, February 7, 1990 — A118 Cold Turkey has an impact, organizer says by Glenn Werkman The Review A campaign by the Saanich Peninsula unit of the Canadian Cancer Society helped out Peninsula cigarette smokers. “I think we made a bit of a dent on the smokers,” said spokesman Rita Kipot. Her comments follow the unit’s one-week Cold Turkey campaign, associated with National Non-Smoking Week, Jan. 21-27. About 20 people decided to quit and entered empty cigarette packages, with their names at neighborhood grocery stores. “Even the non-smokers helped us out,” Kipot said. “One lady who quit was an absolute chimney.” TURKEY WINNERS Following a draw — and several phone calls to make sure entrants really quit — the unit has announced the winners of four turkeys. Richard Brown of Sidney won a turkey from Thrifty Foods. ~He’s struggling, he’s having a hard time but he’s doing it,” Kipot said. Eleanor Lloyd of Brentwood Bay won a turkey from Malba Deli. Sonny Chee, an Oakcrest Foods part-time employee, won a turkey from Oakcrest Saanichton. The store’s manager and assistant manager have also quit smoking, Kipot said. “Keep it up out there guys.” Barry Freeman of Sidney won a turkey from Safeway. “He was a 30 cigarette per day person and he’s quit cold,” Kipot said. “He’s having a hard time but he’s doing it.” Other businesses jumped on the bandwagon. Odyssia Steak House didn’t allow smoking on Cold Turkey Day, nor did the Hotel Sidney restaurant, Tommy Tuckers and the 3rd Street Cafe. Kipot said 3rd Street put up signs and let people make their own decision. Copyprint helped with posters promoting National Non- Smoking Week. A couple of entries in the win-a-turkey contest were found not to be eligible. One man quit 20 years ago and a woman was down to one cigarette a day but hadn’t quit, Kipot said. CHEVROLET OLDSMOBILE Comment on community plan’. reserved until CSBA meets The Central Saanich Business Association won’t comment on council’s intention to remove resi- dential land use designations on ALR land from its draft official community plan — at least until its next meeting. “I can’t give you anything offi- cial,” director Isabelle Jones said last week. ““We haven’t had a meeting of the new executive or the new directors yet.” Dave Thomson, a business asso- ciation director and member of an association committee that pro- duced a community plan report, also declined comment. Jones said people get the impression the business associa- tion wants wall to wall develop- ment but that isn’t true. “1 think we’ve been painted with a bit of a bad brush,” Jones aid. “It’s to our advantage to have our area as livable and attractive as possible.” With warm fires, soft candlelight, quiet music, and good food. .. Jones said the land commission was certainly within its rights to recommend no ALR land be designated for urban development in the community plan. Association past-president Frank Csinos was away on vaca- tion, newly clected president Maureen Beaton couldn’t be reached for comment and incom- ing treasurer Kelly Stevenson refused comment. The association’s community _ plan report recommended that land be removed from the ALR for future urban development. The association’s next executive meeting is scheduled for Feb. 13 and its next regular meeting is Feb. 27, Jones said. Council directed its planner to remove urban designations on ALR land from the draft plan Jan. 22% If you currently have an RRSP. or are thinking about opening one, do you know what the limitations and benefits are for income tax purposes?
