Louise Eldridge said the restau- rant on Mt. Newton Crossroad and the Pat Bay Highway has garbage cans in as many locations as possible. “People are slobs and that’s why we have to revert to decency in human nature,” Eldridge said. “Everyone must clean up their own backyard.” k McDonald’s staff walk a two- block radius around the Mt. New- ton Crossroad restaurant twice a day to pick up garbage that may be thrown out by customers. “Central Saanich council is right when they say educating the public is the problem,” Eldridge _ said. “We're hoping the schools ‘are able to help us.” The restaurant chain plans to write a letter to council about the litter problem — which is not nique to Central Saanich but common near McDonald’s restau- tants. “We get complaints along Gold- stream Avenue Gin Colwood) and = NOTICE AM 550 RADIO SOG around Mt. Tolmie,’’ Eldridge said. But McDonald’s can’t cure the problem on its own and wants public assistance. “Maybe people in problem areas could help with suggestions as to where the litter is,” she said. Specific problem areas can be difficult to spot from a vehicle moving through a neighborhood and persons walking would likely find problem areas more readily, she said. A clean-up day is one way to deal with the problem that’s being considered. Another being consid- ered is placing garbage bins in areas outside the restaurant’s park- ing lot. 1 pom. Daily. HEAR THE — ANSWERS | Eldridge said that all food sold at the drive-through window of a McDonald’s is served in a bag. “But people take lunches in their car and theyre not concerned about other people when they're done. “We'd like to help,” Eldridge said. “I understand the concem but people just don’t think (before throwing garbage from car win- dows).” Eldridge said the litter problem will likely get worse in the sum- mertime. _ HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY “SAM” FEBRUARY 10TH “IMPROVING YOUR HEARING IS OUR CONCERN” MRS.
