A program of practical help for
parents, Systematic Training for
Effective Parenting, will be pre-
sented at the Central Saanich Cul-
tural Centre starting March 22.

Designed for parents with chil-
dren up to age 12, the program
covers emotions, self-esteem, dis-
cipline and effective communica-
tion skills.

The registration fee of $30 per
person or $40 per couple includes
a manual. Each session will be
held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
cultural centre, 1225 Clarke Road,
Activity Room A.

Central Saanich recreation and
the Peninsula Community Associ-
ation co-sponsor the course. For

Central Saanich residents who
do a thorough spring cleaning each
year will have some help from
public works crews.

Instead of hiring a truck or
bribing your local garbage hauler
to take extra items, residents can
haul rubbish to the curb for pickup
between March 12 and 21.

But there are restrictions on
what crews will pick up.

No household garbage will be
taken, nor will building rubble,
rocks, stumps or large piles of
brush or branches.

Get ready for spring cleaning

clean-up campaign — each with a
date for pickup.

Items must be put out by 8 a.m.
on the day of collection and only
items on the municipal boulevard
will be taken. Residences on pri-
vate roads must take items to the
public roadway.

Residents are reminded not to
place rubbish for pickup behind
trees or mailboxes and are
requested to wait until the evening
before pickup to haul it to the curb.

A map showing areas of the
municipality with the date of
pickup is available at the munici-
pal hall on Mt. Newton Crossroad.

DELIGHTED WITH A ceremonial unveiling and dedica-
tion of the Salish Knowledge Totem, at the Legislature
buildings in Victoria Feb. 2, is a young native boy, with
his flag-waving friend. Native school children from
Brentwood Bay were among those to witness the
Commonwealth Games’ Native Committee event.

GIL GILMORE

Years of service by volunteer
Sidney firemen were recognized at
the annual awards night Feb. 3.

Gil Gilmore, who recently
retired from the department, was
made a life member to recognize
16 years of service.

Gilmore has also served on the
Sidney Volunteer Firemen’s Asso-
ciation executive and as a member
of the fire wardens committee.

An award recognizing 17 years
of service was presented to Gor-
don Shadbolt.

Dress belts recognizing 15 or
more years of service were pre-
sented to Mel Baldwin, Harry
Nunn, Monty Gill, Doug Jones
and John Keller.

Dan Holder, Lloyd Rooke and
Dennis Bowcott received 12-year
awards and Lindsay Giles received
a seven-year award.

Two year pins were given to Stu
Fenton, Dave Hutchinson, Rob
Kipps, Neil McKinnon and Marty
Taulu.

The evening, held at the new
firehall on 3rd Street in Sidney,
included ladies appreciation night.
