Then a heat stroke victim in the sauna. Then, in rapid succes- sion, a swimmer suffering from leg cramps, a complaint from a pool patron and a girl struggling in the jacuzzi. The practical side of the final exam for the National Lifeguard Service Course also included han- dling complaints from pool users, a skill which is harder for some candidates than life-saving. “Tf someone is drowning, there is a procedure to handle that but complaints come in every shape and size,” said Healy. He drafted 30 volunteers, many from pool staff, to stage the final exam. For the 14 students, it was the culmination of a 45 hour course which started January 18.
