This year, they have been lucky enough to find one that should be a delight to all who wander through its acre of beautiful grounds. This garden on McDonald Drive is the home of -Mrs. Robert Stewart. She and her husband acquired the property seven years ago and have added to it extensively. It was originally built and landscaped in 1961. On entering the driveway, one is immediately transported into a garden of serenity. collector has been at work. To say this is a low maintenance garden is not really true. The large established trees provide the necessary acid soil which makes ideal growing conditions, but the trees and shrubs have to be shaped and pruned. As well, arbutus trees, as everyone knows, provide a great many hours of leaf sweeping. This garden has developed so naturally over the years and with its rock formations and careful landscaping, it should be one of the highlights of this year’s tour. Other gardens on the Tour this year are all Tall fir trees, arbutus, dogwoods and cherry trees provide a dappled shade for the native hazel, cut leaf maples and weeping cherries. Entwined in these tall trees are a variety of clema- tis vines in all their glory. As one wanders along the paths, bordered by ferns, viburnums, azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, one comes upon a large pond beside the house. The pond is filled with iris and lilies and shaded by magnificent weeping cherry tree and several cutleaf ma- ples. Alas, there are no fish in this pond, the population of herons and racoons make it impossible to keep them for any length of time. As one stands by the pool on the surrounding deck, one looks down upon a lovely sunken garden bordered by a hand- split cedar fence. This is a relatively new addition to the garden and is mostly lawn and evergreens, amidst the tall firs whose gnarled roots on the surface depict their age. Ferns, oxalis, oregon grape, pulmanaria and ivies are growing throughout the gar- den, as well as bamboos, heathers and carpets of cyclamen, erethronium, and a variety of small bulbs. This is basically a spring garden but even in summer there is a blaze of color with the wonderful variety of cutleaf maples. Connoisseurs of these trees will be delighted to find there are so many, a RHODODENDRONS are the pride and joy of Herman and Hella Vaarinou of Lansdowne Road who will open their garden for the annual Verona Garden Tour during the weekend. different and all interesting.
