Feature ~Child’s death sparks s by Valorie Lennox The Review In 1987, when a four-year-old girl was lost in the bush near Hom Lake, experienced searcher Wally Hacking desperately wanted to help: Recovering from a car accident, he could only follow the search reports, which ended with the discovery of the child — dead — in a ditch four miles from her home. The tragedy inspired Hacking to Start a new volunteer career: shar- ing his wood lore with children, so a lost child could stay alive untl found by a search team. Last weekend the first graduates of his Safe and Sound Wilderness Survival program took to the woods near Mill Bay, making shel- ters, identifying edible plants and hanging out their brightly colored survival ribbons. The first class of 28 students was sponsored by the Saanich Peninsula Knights of Columbus and held at St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Sidney. Most of the four to eight-year-olds who participated in the course were drawn from parish families. Accompanied by a parent, each child received 12 hours of class- room instruction and joined in the overnight camping trip at the end of the course. Much of the infor- mation is presented in 26 jingles, repeated frequently so the children assimilate the advice while learn- ing the rhymes. Rhymes remind the children not to cry and panic, how to find shelter and how to make it casier for a search team to find them. Each child is given a survival _ kit, at cost, which contains two orange heavy duty garbage bags, a mirror and a whistle for signaling, a plastic water bag with 20 feet of line so the child can obtain water from a pond or stream, a silver survival blanket, bandages and knee patches, face wipes, toilet paper and scissors. Folded into a package no bigger than a paperback book, the one- and-one-half pound pouch fits on the child’s belt. The children learn how to use each of the items in the pouch. “Tt’s talks and role playing,” Hacking said. He keeps the lIcs- PLAY! The youngsters learn to find edible berries and vegetation and to get fluid from trees. A child who knows how to find water and keep warm can survive for up to.a month in the bush, Hacking said. “This is teaching the children how to live longer until they are found by the search teams.” One favorite game is “good bear, bad bear” which teaches the children how to react to wild animals. For example, a child frightened by an animal learns not to scream and run, which might provoke an attack, but instead curls up on the ground and plays dead. “There haven’t been that many attacks by animals on human beings,” Hacking says. The story- book-inspired fear of wild animals is a greater danger to the child than the animal itself. “We have a heavy thrust on unfounded fears of animals,” Hacking added, explaining that much of the course attempts to teach the child not to panic if lost. He also hopes the course coun- teracts some other well-meaning but potentially dangerous advice given to children and parents. If a child uses wet leaves or branches or is on the damp side of the log, the chance of hypothermia is increased 32 per cent and the chance of dehydration by 10 to 20 per cent, Hacking explained. A In addition, a small child curled under a log and covered with leaves is almost invisible to _ searchers. The same course also recom- mends children lick the dew or rainwater off leaves for moisture but does not teach the children to recognize potentially poisonous plants or plants like stinging net- tles.
