Sports Feeling good without drugs or alcohol Feeling good and getting high on life without drugs and alcohol is a goal to strive for, Grade 6 students from North Saanich School were told recently. National Freestyle Ski Team member Tanya Clarke spoke to the students about how she achieved fourth in the world competitions in her sport while dealing with the many lifestyle challenges that today’s youth must face. The key to success is to set goals and take care of your body, the Students were told. “Goals are something we want to be, do, or have, and can be broken down into short-term goals,” said Clarke. She urged those with sporting goals to exercise, refrain from smoking and drugs, and to use school class time effectively in order to create enough leisure time for training. “Muscle building is important but I don’t believe in steroids, which cause all kinds of prob- lems,” said Clarke, flexing her muscles to the amazement of those in attendance. A diminutive young woman, Clarke warmed that young people who don’t take care of their bodies “will sputter through life on par- tial power.” Clarke said her fear of getting hurt while doing flips was difficult to overcome. “I found out by talking to others that fear is normal — just acknowledge it and work it through — it works.” Don’t give up if you come across a barrier to achieving your WITHA FRIEND AT North Saanich school is skier Tanya Clarke. goal, she urged students. “Every- one falls down, stumbles along the way,” : Clarke said that not every young person is into sports, and goals related to developing friendships, careers and travel or hobbies are important in developing a healthy way of life. She stressed that all young peo- ple have needs — to escape, relax, be confident, and have excitement in their life. “We can get these needs met by achieving our goals, developing friends and family closeness. There are better ways than using drugs.” The way young people party needs a closer look, she warned. “T love to party, but it doesn’t need to involve drinking and drugs. You can have great parties and still lead a healthy lifestyle.” Developing alternative ideas for escape is what kids need to do, said Clarke, whose visit to the school was arranged by the Penin- sula Substance Abuse Prevention Association as one of its educa- tional strategies. May 29, the association will be co-hosting a Parents as Preventors workshop at North Saanich School for parents wishing to learn skills for preventing substance abuse among their children. Residential school to help youth improve life skills A 16-year-old unemployed Pen- der Island youth, facing parent- hood with his 14-year-old girl- friend, was sent to a residential school for four months after plead- ing guilty in Sidney provincial court April 25 to two charges of theft. The youth was also placed on probation for 18 months and directed to accept counselling. Crown counsel Edward Orm- heim said a cabin on Pender Island was broken into and a black and white television set reported stolen Oct. 11. On Jan. 25, a woman reported a break-in to her Pender Island home and the theft of some ROTO-TILLER CLEAROUT SAVE =P $100 $200 $300 ON SELECTED MODELS SUNRISE MACHINERY New Used Farm Equipment 692-5287 2670 Keating x Ra., jewelry and money. The youth was implicated in the first theft when his girlfriend’s mother tured the television set over to police and charged with the second theft after police investiga- tion. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said the youth needs to finish school and find employ- ment, so he can support his girl- friend and their child, but has no idea how to accomplish those goals. He is still living with his par- ents, however his girlfriend wall be evicted from her home if she chooses to carry the child to term as she plans, McKimm said. He agreed with the pre- disposition report recommenda- tion for the residential school as 2496 Beacon Ave. Regular Hours: 9:30 - 5:30 Sunday noon - 4pm the program will help the youth develop life skills and prepare for a return to the public school system. McKimm added that the youth had taken cocaine for the first time before the second theft and was very embarrassed that he had sto- Jen from a friend of his family. Judge Stephen Denroche noted a 1988 pre-disposition report fol- lowing an earlier offence also claimed the youth had leamed his lesson. “You need all the help you can get,” he said, advising the youth to take more responsibility for his life. “Being the father of a child at your age with a woman not old enough to care for a child also shows irresponsibility,” the judge added. “TOYS: Visit our store and choose from a wide variety of BRIO trains, track, and accessories.
