Society calls OCP loaded
gun pointed at Newion valley

The Mt. Newton Valley Conser-
vation Society is escalating its bid
to oppose future development of
the Mt. Newton Valley with a rally
Saturday to open the society’s
center of operations, director
Andrew Yeoman said.

“The Central Saanich official
community plan is a loaded gun
pointed at the destruction of the
Mt. Newton Valley and the degra-
dation of the water quality in
Saanich Inlet,” Yeoman said.

The society said the official
community plan, now in bylaw
Stage, uses the Mt. Newton
Heights Comprehensive Develop-
ment Plan as a guide, although the
plan has never been adopted by
council.

“The directors of the society,
which now has over 300 suppor-
ters and is growing fast, asks that
an independent environmental
impact study of the Mt., Newton
valley be undertaken before any
future development is encouraged
by some members of the munici-
pal council,” Yeoman said.

“The valley society asks for
public support to oppose the parts
of the official community plan that
are in direct conflict with the
environmental objectives stated in
