Outdoors TheReview Aitractive seaweed make for fun beach walks At this time of year, and for months to follow, it is great fun to beachcomb and see how many different kinds of seaweed you can find. | am not an expert in this area but find it intriguing to note the many different sizes, shapes, forms and colors. I have also found it very useful to take along a very good book on ~ seaweeds such as Seaweeds at Ebb Tide by Muriel Lewin Guberlet, published by the University of Washington Press, Seattle. This excellent small book con- tains a wealth of information about these interesting algae, most of which live in the zone between the tides. Illustrations are also excel- lent. Generally, seaweeds thrive in _ zones, the sum total of conditions at certain depths favoring certain kinds over others. Earlier this spring, I noticed the black brant geese feeding upon the thin, tis- sue-like, grass-green blades of sea lettuce which thrives at about the two-foot level while they paid no attention to the brown rockweed or New safety regulations requiring the use of flame-retardant fabrics for all tents sold in Canada were announced recently by federal Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Pierre Blais. “Some canvas tents can burn to the ground in as little as 45 seconds,’ Blais said. “But these new regulations under the Hazard- ous Products Act set stringent limits on the flammability of fab- rics used in tents. The very attractive sea palm (Polstelsia) also prefers the upper tide level but only in areas where the surf beats hard. One can usually see long strands of the bull kelp or bull whip (Nereocystis) along the tideline too, but it has broken loose from depths of 30 or now be flam ments will significantly reduce the risk of a tent catching fire and burning.” The regulations affect all camp- ing tents, children’s play tents, ice-fishing tents and dining shel- ters. Previous regulations, in effect since 1988, required warning labels on tents. These labels indi- cated whether a tent was made with flame-retardant fabric and warmed consumers to take precau- tions when using fire sources FREE PARKING WHITE SEA SAC ALGA Cy Hampson Photo e-retardant THE “BIG ONE’ 7 DAYS A WEEK SIDNEY DROP-IN BINGO FREE PARKING ON SITE 40 feet and has been washed ashore. Most people are familiar with this alga which may taper 40 or 50 feet from its holdfast on a rock to the large bladder at the upper end which keeps the long flat shiny blades afloat near the surface for purposes of photosynthesis. The bladders are filled with air and carbon monoxide. It is hard to believe that this giant kelp can grow to this size ina single season. © | The seaweed in our photo today is the sea sac (Halosaccion) which flourishes at the mid-tide level. Each little section when fully grown is about the size of a medium-sized human finger, smooth and rubber-like in texture. Tiny little pale greenish-yellow, semi-transparent sacs which grow in a very limited zone between high and low tides, Thad a delightful call from Mrs.. Fallot, Ardmore, this week. A couple of days ago, her husband decided on a small fire in the fireplace since it was chilly. Accordingly, he went out to the shed and fetched a basket of wood which he had been saving for such an occasion. On removing a stick or two from the basket, he called to his wife. “Hey, what do we have here? I never heard of an Easter bunny this small!” Mrs. Fallot hurried over. “‘It’s a nest! A bird’s nest with 6 eggs! Right in the wood basket!” ~ Sure it isn’t a cottontail bunny hanging onto the Easter tradi- tion?” ~Of course not. Put the sticks back just as they were and we’ve got to get the basket back into the shed. Hurry!” Her husband took the basket back to the shed, set it down and tried to arrange every- thing around it as he remembered. “The mother must have come in through that broken window,” he Said, pointing at an empty frame. She gently inserted a forefinger and instantly five tiny yellow- upped beaks opened and gaped upward for food. “Land of goodness, the eggs have hatched! And we could so easily have burned up the nest and all. This is one Easter season that I shall never forget!” Wednesday, May 23, 1990 — A10_ Joyride ends with arrests Three Peninsula area teens will face charges after being stopped'in a stolen 1977 Datsun 210 about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sidney RCMP said.
