The gray whale feeds on the bottom of the ocean and when it finds a good spot it often stays in the same area for some time, she said. The whale sucks up a mouthful of mud and sand from the ocean bottom and strains out tiny inverte- brates, Stacey said. Reports from people who spot- ted the whale continued Thursday. Stacey said there are about 21,000 gray whales in the world, most on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. They winter in Mexican waters and come up to. Canada in the spring. Stacey and other marine mam="— mal biologists are studying the activities of the gray whale and ask people to call a Whale Hotline if a whale is scene. She is familiar with the gray whale seen off Sidney because of distinctive markings that could have been caused by a killer whale attack, she said. The biologists are affiliated with Simon Fraser University and ask people to call 380-1925 if a whale is seen in local waters. Septic sludge study backed North Saanich council will pay the $5,000 required by the Capital Regional District for a study into disposal of septic field sludge, council members agreed May 22. Council had requested a study into adapting the Bazan Bay sew- age treatment plant to handle sludge from septic fields as part of the upgrading of the plant. “Tf we don’t at least investigate the cost of treating our septic sludge here, we may end up in four years not only paying for upgrad- ing of a treatment plant in Victoria, but also for hauling our sludge there,” said Mayor Linda Micha- luk. Sludge from local septic fields is handled through Victoria’s treat- ment plant, making North Saanich potentially liable for some of the upgrading costs for that plant, Michaluk suggested. ‘i Your Lung Association a a oe = (5) L oe ‘Musi pecial oeSeee Ss 655- ae & ) Theo Kaloudis Proprietor EVERYDAY BREAKFAST toast SPECIAL ALL DAY SAT. onty $2.95 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM CANADIAN TAKE OUT & GREEK - CUISINE 2 Eggs Hash Browns Coffee or Tea OPEN MON.-SAT.
