Wednesday, July 4,1990 — B5 Ra Se Peninsula victors as lacrosse nears end Peninsula Novice 2 almost snatched an upset victory against league-leader Saanich Novice 1 in Peninsula’s final league game of the season Friday. Playing to a thrilling 9-8 finish, Peninsula came within a single goal of breaking Peninsula’s unbroken winning streak. Coach Steve Vagvolgyi said his players saved their best league performance for their last big game before the playoffs. Peninsula came on strong late in the game, he said, as the team was trailing 9-6 in the third period, then rallied to narrowly miss out on tying the game. In earlier action, Peninsula Nov- ice 2 played to a 3-3 stalemate with archrivals Peninsula Novice 1, June 24. Vagvolgyi said the game was well-contested but the scoreline against Peninsula Novice 2 was kept low because John Underwood did a great job in goal. “Both teams were out to better the other and, through their efforts, showed us what a great game ems res!) i Funeral Chapels 656-2932 or 388-5155 Offer a complete choice of Professional Services. — TRADITIONAL — MEMORIAL — DIRECT CREMATION — FULL PRE-ARRANGEMENTS SERVICES Services from your church or ~ in either of our chapels at 1803 QUADRA STREET VICTORIA lacrosse can be,” Vagvolgyi said. BANTAMS The Peninsula Bantam A lacrosse team continued its win- ning ways with a 10-4 victory over Juan de Fuca Bantam A, June 25. Team spokesman Vicki Walden said Peninsula dominated through- out the game, looking very power- ful in its forward line. Only the excellent defensive play of Juan de Fuca’s goaltender kept Peninsula from running up an even higher goal tally, she added. Thursday, Friday, Saturday Peninsula Midget A squad posted an 11-5 loss against Victoria/ Esquimalt Midget A, June 26. Coach Ron Ashley said his team was hampered by “a lack of bod- ies,” and that he was only able to field two lines for the game. Hence, fatigue was a major fac- tor in Peninsula’s defeat, even though the home team outshot the visitors by 28-12, Ashley said. “We just didn’t take advantage _of our opportunities, where they did,” he said. Peninsula also felt the loss of its regular goaltender, he added. However, the Peninsula players will regroup and prepare them- selves for a more determined effort in the playoffs, which begin July 9, Ashley said.
