Hot turnout for 8-k fun run and walk

and fitness enthusiasts alike during the 8-kilometre Fun

Defying the hot weather, about

78 athletes took part in the Sidney

8-k Fun Run, while about 32

people opted for the 4-k Walk,
Sunday.

Al Niezen was the overall win-

ner in the mens’ division of the

__ 8-k race, posting a time of 26:53
¢ minutes.

Rhonda Robinson came out on
top among the women competi-
tors, with a time of 29:22 minutes.

Niezen’s time also earned him
top honors in the 30-39 year-old
age group, while Nigel Beattie was
runner-up, with a time of 27:41.

The womens’ 30-39 year-old
stream was one by Arlene Marlatt,
with a time of 33:57, while Gwen
Munday’s 35:41 finish earned her
second place.

The mens’ 17-29 year-old group
saw John Cotterall race to victory
in 28 minutes, with Don Kattler
finishing hot on his heels in a time
of 28:10.

Among the female 17-29 year-
_ olds, Rhonda Robinson posted the
~ fastest time, while Gina Gregory
- placed second, with a time of
36:34.

In the 40-plus age group Steve
Baker was the fastest competitor.

Fire safety
for youths

A fire safety course for 11 and
12 year-olds will be held by the
Sidney Volunteer Fire Department
in the mornings of Aug. 7-10.
The course, which is free and
can accommodate up to 15 stu-
dents, is will promote awareness of
all aspects of safety, volunteer fire
- chief Larry Buchanan said.

“The students will not only
learn about fire and fire preven-
tion, but will actually be extin-
guishing fires, practicing basic
first aid methods, learning how to
ride a bicycle in traffic and lear
about boating safety and what to
do during a marine accident,” he
said.

Among other subjects included
on the four-day seminar will be
electrical safety, earthquake aware-
ness and AIDS education, he
added.

Buchanan said the course will
also involve tours of the Sidney
fire hall, the RCMP detachment,
the ambulance facility and the
Sidney Museum — Marine Mam-
mal and Historical.
