« Opinion During this upcoming 124th year in Canada’s history there will be a municipal election, a provincial election and, who knows, maybe the feds will decide to dump on us too. As recent developments on the national scene have shown, politicians are masters of answering short, sensible questions with long, incompre- hensible statements. When I must decide who to vote for, I like to know a bit about the person who has told me that he wants the job of running one of my govern- ments at my expense. Therefore, I would like all potential candidates to prepare short answers — five words or less — to the following questions: — do you think Clyde Wells should be Canada’s next prime minister? — do you smoke? — if Quebec left Canada, would you care? — do you make your own breakfast? — are you for or against abortion? — should 10 per cent fewer trees be cut in B.C. next year no matter what? — if you have real teeth, how many cavities did you have last year? — are border tariffs good for Canadians? — would you hire a homosexual man if he was the most qualified person for the job? — do you cut your own lawn? — are you more than 15 pounds overweight? — is the national debt something that really worries you? — who won the Stanley Cup last year? — do you favour religious freedom? — do you believe that a person has a right to not be religious? — do you exercise vigorously at least three times a week and take long walks? — do you believe a politician should serve How do you like your coffee more than two consecutive terms? — what is your favourite TV program? — what about you do you hate the most? — what is your most endearing quality? — are you for or against capital punishment for murderers? — are you for or against gun control? — what was the last movie you saw and liked? — are zoning regulations good for a commun- ity? — is Nelson Mandela a hero? — at what age should kids be allowed to drive? — at what age should kids be allowed to drink? — does raising the minimum wage cause unemployment among women and young adults? — if you could spend a month in jusi one country which country would you choose? — have you been very drunk at any time in the past year? — are you for or against agricultural subsidies? — should the postal service be privatized? — how do you like your coffee? — are small, private hospitals a good or bad solution to the problem of long waits for hospital beds in B.C? — do you think the government should spend less in order to balance its budget? — what was the last book you read and liked? — have you ever smoked dope? — did you cheer for the Manitoba Native MLA who delayed discussion of Meech in June? — who won best actress at last year’s Academy Awards? — who did Miss Piggy marry? Gentle reader, you may have more or better questions. Why not try them out on your favourite politician during the next election campaign? Even if he or she answers them honestly, you might decide to withhold your vote. @ THE CRIMESTOPPERS program on Van- couver Island will be able to operate much more efficiently with a brand new facsimile machine courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Sidney and The Peninsula. “This will overcome a disadvantage the program has suffered since its inception, allowing them nation-wide contact with other CrimeStoppers as well as police units outside Canada,” a press release said. The machine was presented to CrimeStoppers president Dan Gal- lant by local Kiwanis president Ted Parsons, recently. Kiwanis members will be distributing CrimeStoppers posters to all businesses in Sidney in the near future. kk x THOSE PLANNING TO ENTER the Saanich Fair this summer are advised to pick up a catalogue listing the numerous competitive cate- gories.
