TheReview Wednesday, July 11,1990 — A7 It started one Saturday moming in the spring of "72. Blue Eyes and I were wakened at about 5 a.m. by Cheryl, age two, who, dragging her pillow and yellow bankie, entered our bed and went to sleep. Someone rolled over. I was pushed:out so I went to the kitchen and made some coffee which I took to the spare room with a book and a half glass of brandy which I decided was a suitable reward for being kicked out of my bed. Ron walked in and asked if he and his blue bankie could join me. He said his cat, which should have been in its bed in the basement, had jumped on him and he couldn’t sleep what with all the purring and besides he was hungry and could he please have some juice. When I returned from the kitchen with the juice he had fallen asleep. - I picked up my book and brandy and went to his room where Sandra and Heather were sitting playing cards. The cat was at the front door asking loudly to be let out. I opened the door and then brewed some hot chocolate for the two girls as a special Saturday treat. When I returned to Ron’s room he was there alone. He said he didn’t understand how I could drink that yucky brandy first thing in the morning and that juice was better and was there any chocolate left? The girls had gone to join their sister and mother in my bed so I took their drinks to them, together with their pillows which they had left behind. Blue Eyes had been sent away because she snored. She had taken Cheryl’s: bankie with her which she wore as a shawl. But Cheryl had stayed behind and wanted some hot chocolate. I took my cold coffee and brandy downstairs, «manufactured-more hot chocolate; gathered up some cookies, remounted the stairs and handed around my offerings — except to Sandra who had taken her sister’s pillow and gone to see if Blue Eyes would like to join her in Ron’s room for a snack and a fast game of cards. An early morning mystery When I found them, Blue Eyes was asleep at the foot of the bed with a full house, three fives and a pair of kings, lying beside her ear. The cat scratched at the window. I let it in, picked up a yellow bankie and a pillow which was on the hall floor and went to the couch to read. Heather showed up with an empty juice glass and asked for a refill. I said I'd get it as soon as I finished the chapter. She snuggled under the blanket and wriggled. I couldn’t concentrate so I put down my book, picked up the glass, walked to the kitchen, refilled the glass and my coffee cup, poured one for Blue Eyes and went upstairs. That’s where Heather had gone to feed the cat the last few crumbs of a cookie she had discovered on the rug. I found Blue Eyes sitting in Heather's bed holding a full house. She said she had been sent there to wait until the other hands had been dealt. Heather’s bed was not big enough for both of us so I went to our room where the cat was sitting on my pillow licking its chops. I took a sip of juice, milk, hot chocolate and coffee from a selection of receptacles nearby and opened my book. Cheryl called and said she couldn’t find her bankie. I found it in Sandra’s room and took it to her in Ron’s room where she and Heather were playing with the cat which had slunk it to purr for another breakfast cookie. Ron had taken his pillow and Heather’s bankie to the spare room and was asleep. I returned to my room where Blue Eyes was sort of spread all over and snoring loudly. Rather than wake her, I gathered up an armful of cups and glasses, my book and Sandra’s pillow and tip-toed to the kitchen where I poured a fresh cup of coffee which I took into the living room with my book. Then all the kids arrived and asked what was for breakfast. Blue Eyes wandered in, said she had dreamed that a full house beat a royal flush, and we all ate porridge. The mystery is that we have never, in all the intervening years, found the half glass of brandy. It must be here somewhere. ~ ‘xUPHOLSTERY * DRAPERIES * ANTIQUES KETC. 6655 TRUDEAU TERRACE BRENTWOOD BAY, B.C.
