Special Olympics, Operation Track Shoes and the Donations have also gone to support Canadian Blind Golfing, the Keating trainable mentally handicapped, the Yellow Band Ski Club for blind skiers and to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. A major annual project is Timmy’s Christmas Telethon, which raises money for disabled children. The Lions’ annual car wash brought in over $700 for the tele- thon in addition to the money raised by a Bunny Tag Day. Projects sponsored by the 21- year-old Central Saanich service club include renovation of the Brentwood Community hall, pres- ervation and upgrading: of the old Temperance Hall as a Lions’ and community meeting centre, a lacrosse box, fencing, electrical wiring, bleachers and concession Stands at Centennial Park and donations to a long list of com- munity organizations. “They were clearly the motivat- ors in the community, doing most of the obvious things in the com- munity,’ president Harry Johnson said, explaining why he chose to join the service club. Johnson got a close look at the service club in 1970, when he owned the Brentwood Inn where the newly-formed Lions Club held its twice-monthly meetings.
