MEDIC MOUSE whispers the real story of his mousenapping and return to Kim Pelton, 11, of Sidney. She was one of the youngsters who attended a reception at Sidney municipal hall Thursday to welcome the rodent back fo B.C. from New York. There are two sides to the Medic Mouse story. The mouse’s employers, B.C. Ambulance Service, maintain the righteous rodent was mouse- napped by dastardly villains from New York City’s Emergency Med- ical Services. But New York’s deputy chief Paul Maniscalco, explaining him- self Thursday to Sidney mayor Norma Sealey, local ambulance staff and a circle of youngsters, claimed Medic Mouse came to New York for a holiday. A skeptical Sealey opted for the B.C. Ambulance Service version, issuing a proclamation welcoming Medic House home “after having been mousenapped by the New York City Emergency Measures Service.” In honor of Medic Mouse’s return, she ordered that the day “be marked with merriment and the eating of copious quantities of cheese; and be it further resolved that the use of mousetraps shall be discontinued while Medic Mouse is a visitor in Our Community.” Medic Mouse vanished after an emergency medical seminar in Yakima, Washington, last March. The grieving B.C. Ambulance Ser- vice learned through the Chicago Emergency Services Department that the B.C. service mascot had been spirited away to the Big Apple, probably by Maniscalco, who was a speaker at the seminar. When the mouse returned to the B.C. Ambulance Service Thursday, he was wearing a New York Emer- gency Medical Services uniform in place of his B.C. Ambulance Service uniform. Maniscalco glibly claimed Medic Mouse had applied to join the New York Service, was certi- fied as a New York dispatcher, had started a pension plan and aided in the rescue of some people trapped in a collapsed building, crawling through spaces too small for a human to bring medical aid to the victims. He also claimed the mouse spent his first three weeks in New York partying and visiting rela- tives in the rodent house at the Bronx Zoo. Displaying a bandaged arm, he claimed Medic Mouse became violent when told he had to return to B.C. Maniscalco announced he was dropping any assault charges against the mouse and that the B.C. Ambulance Service had dropped charges of being absent without official leave against the nghteous rodent. “T need my name cleared,” Maniscalco declared, but later admitted to Sealey that he had to prevent co-workers from removing the mouse’s ears during the nego- tiations for Medic Mouse’s returm. That admission cast doubt on Mousenapping: the inside siory The Big Apple’s Emergency Medical Services bit off more than it could swallow when deputy chief Paul Maniscalco heisted B.C. Ambulance Service mascot Medic Mouse from a conference in Yak- The mousenapping — coordin- ated between Maniscalco and B.C. Ambulance Service public rela- tions officer Lynn Klein — included a little good-humored one-upmanship as Klein proved to ‘Give us back our mouse, you raf’ ima, Washington last March. “T got hate mail from third graders,” Maniscalco said Thurs- day, during a Sidney reception welcoming the mouse back to B.C. Maniscalco admitted he began fearing for his pension when mes-_ sages from the B.C. government and the Canadian consul drew the Continued on Page B6 the vacation story as did the 90- minute detention by customs offi- cials when Maniscalco entered Canada and the waming Manis- calco received from a red-coated RCMP sergeant. However the B.C. Ministry of Health decided not to press charges, said B.C. Ambulance Ser- vices public relations officer Lynn Klein. “Chief Maniscalco was given a Stem reminder by the RCMP that on his departure from Canada, his luggage will be closely scrutin- ized,” Klein said. Klein said the reception to wel- come the mouse was held in Sidney because Medic Mouse was originally conceived in the com- munity. Klein hopes the New York City emergency services will reimburse the Ministry for the cost of re- outfitting Medic Mouse in a B.C Ambulance Service uniform. _ Now I have to make a formal request to the Minister of Health for funds for a new uniform. Only Medic Mouse’s running shoes and identification card were returned,” Klein complained. In a prepared statement, the metre-high stuffed mouse claimed he was under a gag: order from the B.C. Ambulance Service because of the negotiations between New York and the B.C. government. “However it would appear the B.C. Ambulance Service will adopt the Big Apple as a natural companion to Canadian cheese,” the mouse said, referring to the twinning of the B.C.
