Sports TheReview Wednesday, September 12,1990 — BD5 Second national pentathion title for Soeliner by Mare Davis The Review Arguably Canada’s top all- round sportsman, Ian Soellner, 21, returned home to North Saanich last week after clinching his second senior national pentathlon championship: The soft-spoken 1987 Parkland Secondary graduate attributes his success to his dedication to the sport and to a love of competing. A pentathlon involves fencing, swimming, pistol shooting, cross- country running and show- jumping. The more well-known sport of his third attempt, in 1988. : But his hopes of making it to the Seoul Olympics were dashed when selectors passed him over due to his lack of experience with major competitions, he said. However, now he feels confident of becoming Canada’s most prom- ising pentathlete at the 1992 tathlon championship in Hungary, as well as placing 15th at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle. But now he is ready to knuckle down to about 20 months of seri- ous preparation for the Barcelona Olympics.
