Senior Games with gold medals, after helping their team win the indoor carpet bowling championship. Eric Kimpton, 78, and his wife Margaret, 77, were mem- bers of the Zone 1 (Ladysmith to Victoria) team that posted a perfect record of ten victories at the Games, which ran Thursday to Saturday. Competing in the Comox Valley, the Kimptons were joined on the Zone 1 team by Elsie Setter, Elsie Jameson and Ethel Sudhues. “TJ was very proud of the players. They played a near- perfect tournament,” Eric Kimpton said. The very competitive Zone 1 team dominated the round- robin competition with some of its best play to date, he said. Valyear will fight with the fough guys Sidney resident Justin Val- year will compete in the first annual Vancouver Island tough guy contest, called Occupa- tional Wars, at Victoria’s Memorial Arena, Sept. 22. Valyear will fight in the 160- 175-lb. lightweight class at the boxing contest, which promot- ers say is for “the average working man,” rather than for experienced boxers. Organizers said up to $1,000 in prize money is up for grabs for the winner of each of the lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight categories. “Not everyone can be an Ali, Tyson or Sugar Ray Leonard but now at least the average working man has a chance to dream,” promoter Jim Himes said. The first of an evening of bouts will begin at 7 p.m. anda portion of the event’s proceeds will go to charity. Racers fo converge on yachi club for sailing Youths from about six yacht clubs around the province will gather in Sidney this weekend to compete in the B.C. Sailing Asso- ciation’s Youth Circuit Race. It’s the first time the Sidney- North Saanich Yacht Club will host the event and organizers are looking forward to it. The event draws top sailors between the ages of 13 to 17. Yacht club junior adviser Hans Stoffelsma expects some of the top 17-year-olds to be there, including a Royal Victoria member who placed second in the Canadian Championships. “It will be very interesting,” Stoffelsma said. “The level will be quite good.” Most participants in the Laser class will likely have their own boats but the club’s Laser 2s and Flying Juniors will also be used. circuit race Of the over 20 entries expected, about a half-dozen will be from the Sidney-North Saanich club. Racing is expected to get under at about 10 a.m. Saturday and will follow an Olympic-style triangle course. The starting point is likely to be in Tsehum Harbor but could be moved further out to sea, depending on winds. It’s expected four races averag- ing five miles will be held Satur- day with an additional three on Sunday. The yacht club’s annual regatta will be held simultaneously, with 50-60 sailboats expected to com- pete in Round-the-Buoys racing, spokesman Doug Jones said. At least six juniors will be sailing the Sidney-North Saanich flag in the youth circuit races, of about 70 graduates of a summer sailing program, Jones said. Wolfe (supervisor of the Apprentice School, Ford Motor Co.) and Everett R. Phelps covers trigonometric functions, formulas and metric conversion tables. “Pipe Fitters and Plumber’s” by. George K. Bachmann featur$s piping installation, flow in pipe, graphical symbols plus sections on plastic pipe, estimating costs and an index of published standards. Several other books are available in this series for builders, drafters, electronics and roofing, siding and painting contractors. Gary D: Meers’ book “The Garpenter’s Toolbox Manual” is from Arco’s “On-The-Job” reference series. It is for the ‘do-it-yourself’ beginner as well as the professional, covering the full range from design to construction with safety tips, codes and| standards, plus standard and metric measures. Sunset has always published traditionally useful books and their “Fireplaces and Wood Stoves” is no exception. Plans and designs are well-illustrated with quality color photographs portraying visual effects. Safe use and maintenance practices are given thorough consideration. “Basic Masonry Techniques” from the Ortho book series is a valuable tool for readers who are contemplating working with bricks, block, stone or concrete. Step-by-step instructions take the builder from design to completion. These books are a very small sampling of what Tanners has to offer, for home projects. If you need a little incitement to make changes to your home, come in and have a look at what they have on the bookshelves.
