A Community The new pastor of St. Andrews Anglican Church, Rev. Trevor Fisher was inducted by Bishop Ronald Shepherd in a special ser- vice Sunday. Fisher comes to Sidney from Powell River, where he has served as rector of St. David and St. Paul since 1985. : “T find Sidney is a good place to be. I’ve been made to feel very welcome,” Fisher said Monday. Church members are enthusiastic and the church has a great deal of potential, he added. A seaside town like Powell River, Sidney is similar in some ways, Fisher added. TheReview Wednesday, September 12,1990 — B2 si. Andrews welcomes new pastor Fisher’s previous experience includes serving as honorary assistant priest in the Parish of St. Simon in North Vancouver and family practice in family counsel- ling at the Deep Cove medical centre. He managed a workshop for St. James Social Service in east Van- couver in 1982. He also served in New Zealand from 1970 until 1980, as a medical social worker for Wairau Hospital, Blenheim; as curate for the Parish of the Nativity in Blenheim, and as an alcoholism counselor with Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs. ‘We need fo involve the growing congregation’ The major challenge in St. Andrews is dealing with the dra- matic growth of the church con- gregation. Fisher estimates the membership is growing at 15 to 20 per cent annually and says new church members need to be encouraged to become involved. “How do you meet the chal- lenge of involving people?” he said. “We need to involve the growing congregation.” He expect the church will con- tinue to attract new members. He was a youth worker with the Waikato and Taranaki Youth coun- cus in Hamilton, New Zealand. He was born in South Africa, emigrating to New Zealand when he was 16 and to Canada in 1981. He speaks Afrikaans, studied in South Africa and New Zealand and was ordained in New Zealand. He has a post-graduate diploma in social work and family counsel- ing. He, his wife Andrea and daugh- ter Cara, 15, all share an interest in music. Shop of Horrors seeks staff The talented Grassroots Theatre Company are seeking staff for a Little Shop of Horrors to open in Sidney from Dec. 18 to 22. The theatre company has chosen this popular musical as the season opener for Grassroots Theatre’s 17th season. Auditions for this musical spoof of horror shows will be held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday in the Parkland School Theatre. A cast of 22 and a technical staff of 50 to 60 people are required. The musical centers on the attempt of a man-eating plant to take over the world, aided by a mild-mannered store clerk. Featured are a vicious dentist, a fluffy-headed heroine and the plant, which grows from a small pot to a room-filling monster by the end of the play. Major production numbers and a Satiric script add to the fun. Audition times and materials may be picked up in the green room of the school from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. For information call 656-5507.
