News *Study is approved for sewage plant The capacity of the Bazan Bay treatment plant and the ability of the plant to treat septic field sludge will both be known by mid- s@ December if North Saanich coun- cil approves a Capital Regional District study. The North Saanich public works committee approved the proposed terms of reference for the $15,000 study Monday night and recom- mended council apply for a $10,000 provincial grant to fund two-thirds of the study. & Norff Saanich council origin- = ally requested the study after resi- dents of Lochside Drive applied to connect to the sewage treatment plant rather than upgrade failing septic fields. The plant was constructed by Park Pacific under an agreement with the municipality that enough capacity be reserved to handle the development of Dean Park Estates. If there is sufficient capacity remaining at the plant, Ald. Rebecca Vermeer suggested sewer service could be provided to the Tseycum and Pauquachin native bands, whose reserves adjoin North Saanich. But Ald. Art McKinnon doubted there would be extra capacity and suggested municipal needs must be met before provid- ing sewer service outside the municipality. Since no decision on connecting Lochside residents to the sewer system can be made until the plant Capacity study is completed, Ver- meer suggested the regional health district relax its deadlines for sep- tic field upgrading until the study is finished. “T hope the engineering side of the CRD communicates with the health side,” she said. Mckinnon said the study must be completed as soon as possible. TheReview Wednesday, September 12,1990 — A5 BRENTWOOD BAY 652-1211 S 7060 W.
