Every 16 minutes a teenager suc- cessfully takes his or her life according to 1986 statistics, Hill said. Every 60 seconds, a teenager fries to commit suicide, Hill added. Using songs like Runaway — about an apparently successful girl who feels so unloved she runs away and commits suicide — and Why? — questions raised by the survivors after a loved one has committed suicide — Reflektor encourages young people to recog- nize and respond to the loneliness of others. ‘We can’t go into the schools and preach the message of Christ but we can go in and teach Christ’s ethics — loving, caring, reaching out for one another and being there for one another’ A member of the Sidney Pente- costal Church, Hill notes all mem- bers of the group come from a Christian background. However their school programs do not preach Christ or formal Christianity. “We can’t go into the schools and preach the message of Christ but we can go in and teach Christ’s ethics — loving, caring, reaching out for one another and being there for one another,” Hill said. All-of the songs performed by Reflektor were written by group members who drew on their own experiences in overcoming life’s problems. Group members believe teen- ager who feel they are unloved and alone are those most likely to commit suicide. “We all want to be loved and cared for. When you believe even your parents don’t care, how can you go and find that love out in the world,” Hill said. Economics may force both par- ents to work, leaving young people coming home to an empty house day after day, Hill said. Or parents may divorce and the teenager may feel responsible for the break-up. One duet performed by the group, Custody, shows the conflict of divorce between parents. The song helps teenagers realize they are not responsible for the prob- lem. Many teenagers take time to talk to Reflektor members after the show. Band members encourage the young people to seek the support and advice of friends, teachers or school counselors. “We try to-help teens under- stand there are people who can help,” Hill said. Another song, Looking for Friendship, dramatizes the conflict of teens caught between peer pres- sure and trying to maintain their own identity. The importance of self-worth is stressed in Reflektor’s elementary Continued on Page B8 — NOTARIES PUBLIC — Conveyancing ** Mortgages ** Wills Powers of Attorney ** Promissory Notes Liens ** Mobile Home Transfers Residential Building Contracts ** Fax Services ** Title Services ** Title Searches ** Affidavits ** Personal Property Registry LAURIE SALVADOR & SUSAN DAVIS 2412 Beacon Ave., Sidney 656-3951 Sat mcReview REFLEKTOR’S ROCKERS are (front, left to right) Andy Bowmer, Andrew Janz, Leigh Penner, Warren Daniluck, Connie Schmit, Ryan Hill, (Second row, left fo right).
