HUDDLED OVER THE ball, Parkland senior boys’ basketball team newcomer Fedrico Sinclair waits for the right moment to launch a shor. Lady Panthers commanding second in league basketball Despite posting its first league loss of the season Wednesday, the Parkland Panthers senior girls’ basketball team still commands second spot in the Greater Victoria league standings. Two recent victories over Penin- sula rivals the Stelly’s Stingers helped soften the blow of the Panthers first loss — making their league record six wins and one defeat. A 76-25 romp over Stelly’ S Thursday demonstrated why the Panthers are so strong this season, coach Marg Metcalfe said. “We only had seven players due to injuries but we still played well enough to blow Stelly’s away,” she said. “Our scoring percentage was really high.” By playing a fast-paced game -and by pouring on the pressure throughout, Parkland dominated from start to finish. “We pressed in the first half and caused quite a few tumovers. And in the second half, we fast-breaked and had some good rebounding,” Meltcalfe said. Genea Grist turned in an inspired performance to score 31 of Parkland’s points, while team- mate Natasha Kipot added 20 points. ters — Willow Cassidy and Joleen Hook — were missing due to injuries, and are not expected to return until early next month. Wednesday night saw the Panthers declawed by undefeated league-leader Lambrick Park. Metcalfe said the crushing 93- 31 loss was partly due to the absence of Cassidy and Hook, but admitted it was mainly due to Lambrick Park’s superiority. “They re a bigger and stronger team and they’re really fast. Basi- _ Cally, they’ve got really good ball players and look set to win the league,” she said. With only seven players in attendance for Parkland, the Sid- ney team still dug deep to provide a gutsy performance. “We played pretty well consid- ering and we never gave up,” Metcalfe said. In earlier action, Parkland swept aside the Stelly’s Stingers 54-33, Jan. 10. Stelly’s played well on the def- ence but began to wilt when. the Panthers applied offensive pres- sure with a full-court press, Met- calfe said. “We picked up a few points when we pressed but we had to work hard to beat them,” she said. TheReview Wednesday, January 23, 1991 C5 Panthers topple top-ranked Langley The Parkland Panthers senior boys’ basketball team had mixed fortunes, with two wins and two losses last week. In exhibition action, the Panthers edged top-ranked Lang- ley 64-60, Saturday. Panthers coach Joe Milligan said his team played a strong tactical game to dominate most of the action. “We played a good consistent game and stuck to our game plan, which always works well for us,” he said. “When we play that way we tend to score the same kind of baskets time and time again.” Despite the final score, the Panthers kept a comfortable lead of about a dozen points for much of the game, he said, At the half, it was 38-27 in Parkland’s favor due mainly to the team’s disciplined style of play and its patience in setting up scoring chances. But the Langley players muscled their way back into the game in the late stages with a comeback that provided too little too late. Leading Parkland’s scoring was Justin Gayler, who notched up 21 points, while hard-working Mike Golin earned 15 points. Six-foot-five newcomer Fedrico Sinclair also added some welcome height and power to the team’s offence, Milligan said. “He’s proving to be a really good rebounder and shot blocker,” he said. In spite of impressing onlookers with an inspired performance, the Panthers dropped a 79-69 loss to up-Island powerhouse Port Alberni Armada, Friday. “We had a really good game and it actually proved to be a contest that we could have won,” Milligan Said. “Tt came right down to the wire, but Port Alberni scored the last three baskets.” An aggressive man-to-man estimate of legal costs. At the half-way mark, both teams were tied 44-44. As the top up-Island high school team piled on the pressure, it still could only manage to pull ahead 56-53 by the end of the third-quarter.
