the shells of their own problems, the reader, drawn into the mesmerizing
processes, gains more understanding of his own past and consciousness,

Among the tales: Maggie, a paleontologist terrified by intimacy; Lisa, who
can read the thoughts of inanimate objects, trying to come to terms with her Sun. 8a.m. - 6:00 p. m
call-girl mother; the aging owner of a trucking company who stops time by : ae
becoming catatonic, and who poses, for Weinberg “that impossible question
of when is a human being playing and when is he really what he purports to
be?” Then there’s Eddie, institutionalized after claiming to be a lion. “Eddie's
dry sense of humour made him almost completely indistinguisable from real
psychotics. If he said bizarre things without smiling, how was anyone to know

the degree of his belief in what he said?”

Weinberg takes the position that the therapist's role must never be to

undermine the life-styles that people choose. It's this sympathetic approach g
that makes The Taboo Scarf such a wise, frank and marvellously readable

book.
