| i News Barriers halting highway cross traffic at the Amity Road and McDonald Park Road intersections will be installed between March 13 and 15, North Saanich Mayor Maurice Chazottes announced Monday. “We've been pressing for this for months,” Chazottes said. The intersections of both roads with the Pat Bay Highway are among the most dangerous sections of the highway, he added. “The RCMP have been talking about this for a long, long time. They consider the intersections very dangerous,” Chazottes said. The barriers will stop traffic from crossing the highway at Amity and prevent left-hand tums at the intersection from either the highway or from Amity. TheReview At the McDonald Park Road intersection, left-turn lanes will allow southbound highway traffic to turn off the highway into Sidney or northbound traffic to turn left to reach the Sandown Racetrack. However the barriers will stop traffic from crossing the highway or from turning left off McDonald Park Road onto the highway. The municipality began strongly advocating the barriers once the Ministry of Transportation and Highways claimed the Pat Bay Highway upgrade was needed to improve safety, Chazottes explained. “This was a case where the highway could be made safer immediately without spending millions of dollars.” Scarecrow crossing guards for Keating Crossroad area Dummy crossing guards made from plywood will likely be slow- ing traffic on Keating Crossroad near the Mt. Newton Middle School in the near future. As well, a better advance warn- ing system of school crosswalks for eastbound vehicles will be installed by Central Saanich engi- neering staff. Council Monday approved a traffic safety recommendation urg- ing the school district to proceed with the concept of providing special signs to be set up when the crosswalk is used by students. Ald. Arlene Box said it is a very severe problem with fast traffic on a wide road. “We should also offer some encouragement to the police department to monitor this loca- tion to ensure-the safety of chil- dren is being addressed,” Box said. ; Ald. Jack Mar said the police have caught a lot of people speed- ing in the area and quite frequent- ly, the culprits are parents driving children to school. Mar said there should be two crossing guards at the location, but the school district has said they can’t afford to pay for two. Earlier in the Monday meeting, council rejected a request for fund- ing from the Saanich School Dis- trict. The district asked Central Saa- nich to contribute $12,930 to pay for the services of four crossing guards — one at Keating and Oldfield, another east of Mt. New- ton School, one at West Saanich and Wallace for Brentwood School and another at Keating and Central Saanich roads for Keating Ele- mentary, at a rate of $3,230 each per year. Z Ald: Clarence Bolt recommend- ed council file the request and suggest the funding come from the board’s budget.
