News by Valorie Lennox The Review Paul Howard has a guaranteed recipe for family togethemess. Put a husband and wife and two children on board a 30-foot boat and sail around the world, cover- ing 40,000 miles over five years. “You have to be very compati- ble, very considerate and not mind the children on your lap,” Howard said. Thursday night he will share experiences drawn from the first two years of the trip in a presenta- tion at the Blue Peter Pub in Sidney, starting at 7:30 p.m. He and his wife, Fiona McCall, have chronicled the entire voyage in two books: All in the Same Boat, published in 1988, and Still in the Same Boat, published in 1990. He admits a 30-foot boat is minimum size for circumventing the globe, especially with two young children aboard. When the couple left Toronto on July 1, 1983, son Peter was four and daughter Penny was six. “The kids really grew up on board,’ Howard said. They also started school and took their first grades through correspondence courses. The family is part of a select group. Only 450 boats with ama- teur crews have circumvented the globe since the first non- professional sailing around the world in 1850. However the trip wasn’t lonely. An estimated 300 amateur boaters were making long ocean voyages at the same time as Howard’s family. Of those, Howard estimates 20 per cent of the crews included youngsters. His own children made friends from around the world, both with other sailing families and in the countries they visited. “They are very gregarious, ” Howard said. “When they met other kids they had to immediately make fends.” One family they sailed with for almost a year came from Australia. The family retumed home to Aus- tralia with Howard’s family in tow and hosted them over Christmas. Now that family has sailed to Canada’s west coast and Howard has come from Toronto for a reunion.
