Sports TheReview Wednesday, March 20,1991 — A24 Wyatt second Canadian on elite rugby side Kapteyns by Mare Davis The Review Stelly’s Secondary school teacher Mark Wyatt has been selected as only the second ever Canadian rugby player to play for the famed British team the Barbar- lans. The elite team is formed by invitation and is made up of top international players — mainly British — who play “‘friendly” matches on special occasions. Wyatt, who is a regular starter for the Canadian team, said he was “Surprised” to learn of his selec- tion after hearing about it from the national team coach two weeks ago. : ~ Its just wonderful to be picked to play. I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Wyatt said. A solid reputation among inter- national rugby circles is what Wyatt feels has earned him this unexpected selection for a team that is usually made up exclusively of Britons. “Normally the Barbarians’ method for invitation is to look within their own countries before they consider players from other nations,” Wyatt said. “It’s not too frequent that they take a player from outside of that realm.” Wyatt will play for the Baa- Baa’s (as they are also known) in his customary position of fullback in Wales against Cardiff on March 29 and against Swansea on March Hil, The only other Canadian to have played for the Barbarians was national team hooker Mike Luke of Newfoundland, who played for the Baa-Baa’s in 1981. Though he’s 29 years-old and has played international rugby for nearly a decade, Wyatt said he’s in his prime. “Tm very fit right now and stronger than in the past. I’m certainly more fit that most players in Canada’s national program,” he said. Wyatt’s feels he’ll be well- Suited to the Barbarians’ style of game which is usually very fluid and full of flair. “They tend to run the ball a lot and aren’t scared to take risks. That’s the kind of game I enjoy the most,” he said. With about two dozen full inter- national appearances for Canada under his belt since 1982, Wyatt has been described by national team coach Ian Birtwell as Can- ada’s most talented and consistent kicker. ~ AL an international level, every county should have at least one kicker like that,” Birtwell said. Wyatt once tied the world record for the most number of penalty goals scored in an international match when he scored all of Canada’s points in a 21-10 win over the United States in 1986. Wyatt also intends to find the time to coach the senior boys’ rugby team at Stelly’s, which starts its regular season next month. Coaching the Central Saanich school’s team is the least he can do to thank the Saanich School District, which has allowed him the time off to play international rugby, he said.
