News , sidney group gives $1,000 * to Save the Children appeal Sidney Save the Children fund has sent $1,000 to the special Iraq crisis appeal started by the Save the Children Fund of the United Kingdom. The local group will accept donations to the crisis fund at the annual Spring Tea April 27. The tea will start at 2 p.m. in the Silver Threads Centre, 10030 Resthaven Drive, Sidney. Sidney Mayor Marie Rosko will open the tea. Guest speaker will be Beth Neilson, project officer for the Save the Children Fund of B.C. supplied 30 tons of sheeting, blan- kets and clothes dropped by RAF planes over the border area of Iraqi Kurdistan. Three Save the Children staff members are in Turkey with a budget of 50,000 pounds to pur- chase food and possibly tents for refugees. Save the Children is also investigating a possible transport operation to the area from Pakis- tan, given the problems of supply routes from Turkey and the diffi- culty in obtaining supplies in Iran. On April 11 the Save the Chil- dren fund was part of the first food convoy to get through to Basra in southern Iraq.
