Despite carrying the play for much of the game, the Division 7B Gurton’s Gators soccer team was defeated in a District Cup final Saturday. The Gators fell to Lakehill soc- cer club 2-1 in the final, which was played in Sooke. The taller Lakehill squad got the first goal of the game after launch- ing a long ball forward and scoring on a goal mouth scramble. However, from that point on the Gators carried the play, said coach David Main. Their persistence was rewarded just before halftime. Peter Makris booted the ball on the net, forcing the Lakehill goalkeeper to make a : save. But Joel Woods was able to ee slam the rebound into the goal for the Gator’s equalizer. Main said the second half opened with the Gators applying continuous pressure on Lakehill, as Gator midfielders were deter- mined to keep the ball in their Opponent’s end. But Lakehill was awarded a direct penalty shot in its only penetration of the Gator’s goal area in the half, said Main.
