Community - A dangerous search for the truth devastates relationships in the Peninsula Players’ production of Dangerous Corner by J.B. Priest- ley. The drama will be presented May 22 to 25 and May 30 to June 1 starting at 8 p.m. each night in St. Stephen’s Church Hall, off Mt. Newton Cross Road in Central Saanich. Originally written in 1932 and presented both in London and on Broadway, the play is both a mur- der mystery and a psychological study. The gradual revelation of the truth about the murdered man disrupts the relationships of the victim’s family and friends, rais- ing the question of how much truth can be tolerated in human relation- ships. Directed by Sid Clarke, the pro- duction features Helen Blanken- borg, Phyllis Clarke, Gayle Hozack, Annie Spracklen, Eric Grace, Hugh Peaker and Tony Garnett. Tickets are available from Tan- ners Books in Sidney and from The Thought Shop in Brentwood. Tickets are $6 or $5 for students and seniors. A special benefit performance of the play will be held May 29 at 8 p.m. with proceeds going to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foun- dation. Refreshments and a chance to meet the cast will follow this performance. With her is nephew Norman, Spooner. A minister’s daughter, born 100 years ago in Oxfordshire, England, celebrated her 100th birthday in the extended care unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital May 15. Margaret Jane Bacon, known as Renee, was joined by family and friends for the celebration, many of whom had known her since she first came to Sidney in 1948. She first came to Canada in 1921 to join her brother, who was farming at Olds, Alberta. A year later she married Charles Bacon and they farmed in the same area until 1948, when they moved to Sidney. They were members of St. Andrews Anglican Church and Renee was an active member of Silver Threads when the club was first formed. Her husband died in 1973 how- ever Renee remained active in the community and especially enjoyed carpet bowling at the Silver Threads Centre. She was admitted to hospital in 1988. She continues to be an excellent cribbage player, enjoys doing vol- unteer work in the unit and watch- ing the bird life on the hospital grounds. Among the guests at the May 15 birthday party were her sister-in- law Jennie Falk of Summerland, nephew Rick Spooner from Olds, Alberta and nephew Norman Spooner of Whitecourt, Alberta. building management. comprehensive benefit package. 1991. Little Brown. 544 pages. $27.95 Author of Giles Goat Boy and The Sot-Weed Factor, Barth is back with another epic, rambunctious novel full of narrative high jinks. Set in both the modern world and the mythic realm of medieva Baghdad, The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor is the story of Simon Behler (pen name Baylor), born and raised in Maryland’s Tidewater country. Baylor has made a name for himself as a journalist by writing a series of books about his own trave experiences. He’s now 50, out of fashion, and his marriage is on the rocks. What to do next? (who reminds him of the | : the 20th century. He marries Yasmin, and the couple set sail for Sri Lanka. But this voyage is an echo of the last one; Yasmin drowns and Baylor finds himself back on the shore of Maryland. . Plenty of exotic characters and settings here, but somehow thef book feels less than a novel and more like a series of insubstantial vignettes, laced with graphic sex-scenes, in which poor Baylor isk always at sea, one way or the other.
