News TheReview _ Wednesday, May 22,1991 — A110 Health unti moving in about two years by Girard Hengen The Review The Saanich Peninsula Hospital board has agreed to allow the CRD’s public health centre in Sidney to move to the hospital site. Hospital assistant administrator Murray Halkett said the Capital Regional District approached the hospital asking if it would be possible to relocate from the build- ing it shares with Town of Sidney staff. “The Saanich Peninsula Hospi- tal board of directors has agreed in principle,” he said May 11 during a hospital open house. According to a master plan update to the year 2001 on display at the open house, the new health unit would be situated slightly south of the hospital in a separate building. He said before accepting the move, the hospital had to study its own needs for the coming decade. “When the CRD approached us about coming on site, we said it makes sense, but we do not know our needs for the future....Can we afford to give up space?” The master plan was updated in late March, and the board felt the move was possible without jeopar- dizing future hospital growth, he said. He said the hospital wants to negotiate with the CRD to con- struct parking on the grounds, since the health unit would be built on existing parking spaces. A move isn’t expected for at least two years. Dr. Shaun Peck, regional medi- cal health officer for CRD Health, said the CRD still plans to main- tain a storefront presence in Sid- ney. > “What it will be at this time, I don’t know,” he said last week, adding it could offer services on a part-time instead of a full-time basis. And he said clients are being surveyed to determine the impact a move will have on them. Peck said the search for a new location began when the Town of Sidney approached the CRD say- ing it was anxious for the health unit’s space. Town administrator Geoff Logan said the Town has made efforts over a number of years at getting the health unit moved. has a major $12.6 million expan- sion plan in the works. The hospital is seeking approval from the provincial government and the CRD to fund a planning grant for the addition and renova- tions. Halkett said it could take a few years, perhaps as many as five, for construction to be completed on the venture. He said the expansion is “ser- vice driven.” “Tt is all consistent with provid- ing more care in the community,” especially in the areas of clinical and outreach services. The plan includes a new emer- gency department, expansion to the laboratory, a new ambulatory clinic, an addition to the X-ray department, enlargement of physi- otherapy, new staff and office space and the proposed public health unit. He said there will be no major increase in the number of acute care beds. “We want more staff ... but we have nowhere to put them,” he Said. “Tt certainly looks positive they are going to move,” said Logan, adding town staff will have to cope until then. “We're just going to have to do the best we can with the idea that hopefully they will move in two years,” he said.
