Continued from Page A6 The impact on the Peninsula includes the following: more cars, more noise pollution, more stop signs (Six at the latest count within the ferry compound and highway), greater consumption of gasoline, overpass at extremely high level, wider dispersion of noise, and greater inconvenience for local drivers and emergency vehicles. Local roads will be more haz- ardous for school children to access buses and ride bikes to and from schools. Other items that might be of concer — a highway patrol would see a reduction in problems from Swartz Bay to Victoria. The week- end line-up on the highway await- ing boarding will continue. We can expect during weekends/summer- time at least once a week to see cars backed up all the way to Wain Road. And, one other 1tem — on page 27 of B.C. Tel directory under Earthquake Info, “if driving dur- ing the shaking, don’t panic pull your car to the side of the road and stop. Avoid overpasses Or power lines.” This list is surely incomplete, but must be part of the reconsider- ation and need for a moratorium to include Swartz Bay terminal and Lands End Road overpass so that it can be included as part of the total picture in a carefully integrated ~ unit covering the entire Island’s needs. This is an issue that will drasti- cally affect all of us in the com- munity. Time is of the essence. Please write/call your MLA and express your concer. I would also welcome your comments. Ald. Dee Bailin North Saanich Work together Editor: Regarding Ms. Barrett’s letter (Man vs. Woman, The Review, June 19, 1991) on the topic of the changing roles of men and women in society, I offer the following response. in the mis, Barrett implies "2 and don’t know which way to turn, call the ~Wetome Wig. This is clearly false. Contrary to Ms. Barrett's image of the male as “protector of the weaker sex,” such violence has always been present, but usually concealed. Ms. Barrett also feels that a woman’s choice of a traditionally male occupation is an invitation for violence against her in “their homes and in the streets.”’ This absurd remark is yet another instance of blaming the victim rather than the perpetrator. It is the joint responsibility of the sexes to work together towards “a peaceful and law abiding world. This can only begin when men and women no longer treat each other as adversaries, but instead co-operate as equals. Theresa Van Domeslaar. Sidney Don’t do that Editor: Dear Fisherys and’ Oceans. Last night I saw something I didn’t like at all. People were catching dogfish, killing them, and putting them back. Is there anything you can do?
