Real estate sales remain brisk in June

Although not as strong as May’s
record-breaking month, real estate
sales in June continued at a brisk
pace in Greater Victoria, said the
Victoria Real Estate Board.

In Victoria, there were 814
transactions for a total of $133.6
million, compared with 455 sales
last year and 1,083 in May, when
an all-time record was set.

On the Peninsula, in Central
Saanich there were 23 sales in
June worth $4.4 million, for an
average price of $188,000.

In Sidney, there were 21 transac-
tions valued at $3.2 million, for an
average of $153,000, while in
North Saanich, 19 sales were
worth $5.4 million, for an average
of $251,000.

High Endeavours is both a love story and an adventure story
1 about'the most accomplished and adventuring couple of the
twentieth century,” Miles and Beryl Smeeten.

Beryl inspired Miles from the moment they travelled overland
together from India to England in 1934 (when she was the
young wife of Miles’s commanding officer in the British Army
in India) until her death near Cochrane, Alberta, (where they
spent their last years breeding endangered wild animals) in
1979.

In the years between the forbidden love affair and the
marriage in 1938, Beryl travelled alone across four continents
while Miles was serving in the Western Desert and and Burma.
Then, at the end of World War Il, the Smeetons bought a home,
sight unseen, in a country they had never visited - 450 acres of
wilderness on Salt Spring Island (it was, in fact, my great-
grandfathers farm at Musgrave’s Landing.)

When | was a child my father used to tell stories of his own
adventures with the Smeetons. The one | remembered best is
where my father left his boat, a 40-foot motor-sailor, Froggy, -
with the Smeeton’s on winter, while he was abroad. Milesk
Smeeton, Dad claimed, burned the engine out of his boat.

My father told this story in the light of the Smeeton’s
subsequent remarkable achievements. In 1955, both aged fifty
and having little experience at sea, they sailed around Cape}
Horn in their yacht Izu Hang, then wrote a book called Once is}:

Drawing on their private diaries, letters, the reminiscences of
=) scores of friends and their daughter, Clio (who lived, untilé
(1, recently, on Wain Road where she had a shelter for hurt wild}
