Scuiiling delayed
fo ensure safety

Preparing a huge freighter for
sinking off Portland Island to
create an artificial reef is taking
longer than expected.

It is likely the scuttling of the
ship will take place Aug. 10, rather
than July 27 as planned, said Gene
Hemsworth, Sidney-based
national director of the Profes-
sional Association of Diving
Instructors (PADI), one of the
groups involved in the project.

He said the 175-foot G.B.
Church is being renovated to
ensure diver safety at B.C. Ferries
facilities in Vancouver. Doors are
being plugged, and jutting pieces
are getting cut off.

The ship will be sunk as
planned in about 20 metres of
water off the east side of Portland
Island. Once it is secured at the
bottom, the Artificial Reef Society
of B.C., the group spearheading
the project, predicts the old dilapi-
dated structure will become a
mecca for diving enthusiasts.

But making it safe for divers “is
taking longer than we antici-
pated,” said Hemsworth.

“Td say it’s 75 per cent sure
(Aug. 10) is the way it will be,” he
said.

He said diver safety won’t be
jeopardized just to meet original
projections.

Safety “is the biggest thing of
all,” said Hemsworth. “If it starts
out safe it will stay that way for a
long time, and be easy to main-
tain.”
