At the B.C. Canoe Racing Championships, held July 7 in Cowichan, one of the Geronimo Club’s 11-man racing crews took the B.C. championships. “We have been winning through Our season,” Says captain Wayne P] -@ Momis. The club sponsors two 11-man racing crews, one 10-member women’s racing crew and one 10-member buckskin crew for those aged 16 and under. Team members practise for two spending some time paddling in single canoes and some time run- ning. The club owns four 1i-man canoes, three six-man canoes and many single and double canoes. Training starts in April and con- tinues until the end of the racing season in August. Morris said there are about seven weekends of { canoe racing remaining in the F@ @season. “We never turn anyone down. If they come out, we never tum anybody down if they want to try out,’ Morris said. Members of the senior men’s team range from 15 to 45 years old. Last Sunday the club sponsored a series of canoe races off the Tsartlip Reserve. Along with the 11-man canoe races, there were single canoe races for children as young as five. “We'te trying to encourage our youth to keep up our cultural sport.” In addition to the cultural aspects of canoe racing, club members must also keep them- selves healthy if they want to be . | 4 part of a team able to paddle five to six miles in 45 minutes. “Doing this sport, there is no smoking, no drugs and no drink- hours-each day, Morris said; ing,” Morris noted. Linked with canoe racing is the skill required to make canoes and paddles. Morris and his brother Leonard make many of the paddles for the Geronimo team, which are painted an eye-catching red for racing. Many of the canoes used by the club were made up-island, Morris said. In his mother’s family, Mor- ris recalls an uncle who built canoes and paddles. ‘We're trying to encourage our youth to keep up our Culfural sport’ He is now searching for a suita- ble cedar log so club members can < try to build a craft. “We._want to see if we can build ! an 11-man canoe.” Such a canoe | would measure 14 to 16 metres : and weigh from 135 to 180 kilo- : grams. ; “Tt takes a lot of time and a lot ~ of effort. But it is a lot of fun and it keeps people going,” Morris said. Some of the effort which goes — into the canoe club was recognized Sunday afternoon, when young canoe club members presented gifts to Elders Ivan and Madeleine Morris. The couple received folding chairs and an umbrella, so they could watch races in comfort. Tom Sampson praised Ivan Moris’ coaching and the time and 4) CREATIVE TOUCH ESTHETICS 2201 Henry Ave. Formerly at Studio Landmark Patti Hawkings has now opened up an esthetics salon in her home.
