Holding takes triathlon class Monty Holding, who is based out of the Panorama Leisure Centre, won his age class at a recent triathlon held in Port- land, Ore. Holding placed first in the men’s 45-49 class of the Hage Lake Classic triathlon on July 14. The race consisted of a 1,500-metre swim, 40-K cycle and 10-K run. Bowling win for C. Saanich Members of the Central Saa- nich Lawn Bowling club won an event at a recent competition sponsored by the Oak Bay club. In the Mixed Hearts Fours, the 1-Game winners from Cen- tral Saanich were John and Lillian Turner and John and Joan Noott. Sidney youth wins age group Carla Willock, a 12 year old from Sidney, won her age cate- gory at the B.C Tel Duathlon Fat Tire race July 14. The youngest competitor in the competition, she placed first in the 12-15 group. NHL vets join tourney lineup About 140 golfers are scheduled to teeoff for the Ist Annual Saa- nich Peninsula Hospital Founda- tion Celebrity Golf Tournament Saturday. The tournament will be held at the Glen Meadows Golf Club. The foundation hopes to raise $25,000 to $30,000 for the purchase of new medical and hospital equipment. Five NHLers are on the lineup, including Vancouver Canucks Jim Sandlak, Cliff Ronning, Troy Gamble and Ron Delorme, plus Doug Bodger of the Buffalo Sabres. Canadian women’s curling champions Julie and Jodie Sutton of Victoria are also expected to compete, as is Dan Porteous, head golf pro at Glen Meadows, sports fisherman Charlie White, and a host of others. These include Hon. Robert Rog- ers, former Lt.-Gov., and Jane Rogers, honorary patron of the hospital foundation. Men capiure Woodwyn Trophy The men’s team won the com- petition for the Woodwyn Farm Trophy sponsored Sunday by the ladies’ division of the Glen Mea- dows Golf Club. The men’s team earned the trophy with a score of 376.5 points, to 343.5 points for the women’s side. The club also held a competi- tion for closest to the pin on four holes. On hole four, for men with a 19 and over handicap, the award went to Bob Bentham. On number eight, for ladies with a 30 and over handicap, the prize went to Marguerite Kendall. Ruth Trelawny won the competi- tion on hole 14, for ladies with a 29 and under handicap. And Bob Harding won for men 18 and under handicap on 17. Judging the competition was Dr. A.H. Lane, of Olympic Lane Ranch. Champion in senior showman- ship was awarded to Michelle Passmore. Reserve went to Andrew Preto. Kimberley Kennedy was the intermediate champion in show- manship, while Clayton Arnold was the reserve. Junior showmanship champion was Kristin Ringstad. Mark Verha- gen won the reserve award. In the grand champion competi- tions, Passmore was the winner, with reserve awarded to Preto. Grand champion steer was awarded to Preto, for a Red Angus breed. Reserve champion was giv- en to Kennedy, for a Limousin Hereford X. Finally, Arnold, with a Hereford Heifer, had the grand champion female. Reserve champion was Jessica Adams, also with a Here- ford Heifer. Piranhas swim to third at important meet The Piranhas Swim Club fin- ished third overall at a prestigious meet last weekend. They competed Saturday and Sunday in the Coquitlam Invita- tional, the top meet in the province next to the provincial champion- ships, said assistant coach Cathy Hanan. The Piranhas placed behind the Richmond Kigoos and host Coqui- tlam Sharks, Piranhas earning firsts were: Jennifer Deane, division 5 girls’ 100-metre breaststroke, Jens Jakobsen, division 4 boys’ 100m breaststroke, and Jennifer Dewolf, division 7 girls’ 50m and 100m freestyle. Robert Carlow was second in division 5 boys’ 50m freestyle. Jenelle Cassidy was third in division 4 girls’ 50m freestyle, as was Ewan Dewolf in division 3 boys’ 50m backstroke, Daniel Deane in division 5 boys’ 100m breaststroke and Jonathon Owen in division 4 boys’ 100m backstroke. Touring field hockey team takes on Tenderloins tonight International women’s field hockey comes to Sidney tonight with an exhibition match between a touring team from Germany and a team partly comprised of local players. The visitors, a ladies’ masters club from Villingen, Germany, takes to the field at Parkland Secondary School at 6 p.m. against the Sidney-based Tender- loins. The Tenderloins, a masters team which has been together since 1985, includes members from the Hobbits ladies team. Others on the team come from the Evergreens as well as one player each from Edmonton, Hawaii and England. The Tenderloins have played in the Golden Oldies International Festival in recent years.
