Community Editor: Valorie Lennox 656-1151 Grant given for Deep Cove hall study North Saanich has received a $3,075 B.C. Heritage Trust Fund grant to study feasibility of restor- ing the old community hall at the comer of West Saanich Road and Wain Road in Deep Cove. The hall, built in 1922 by the Deep Cove Social Club, is owned by the municipality. Although the building has not been used as a community hall since the 1950s, the newly-formed Deep Cove Community Hall Association hopes the building can be upgraded for community use. “We'te very excited by getting this grant. It’s been quite a lot of work achieving it,” said associa- tion president Terry Ridings. ‘Af the end of this exercise we may not have anything, so we don? want to form this huge organization’ The application to the B.C. Heri- tage Trust Association was made in March, despite objections from North Saanich volunteer fire chief Terry Towle that use of the site for a community hall could hamper firemen using the adjoining Wain Road fire hall. Speaking on behalf of the fire committee at Monday’s council meeting, Ald. Brian Dunic urged council to pass a motion declaring the hall could not be used as a community centre on the present Site. Firemen fear increased traffic at : the hall would block access to and from the fire hall, Dunic-said. Council defeated the motion by . a four to three vote, with Ald. Bill ~ Turner and Ald. Bill Gordon back- ing-Dunic. Mayor Maurice Chazottes, who cast the deciding vote, said council should wait for the heritage report before making a decision. Ridings said the study will con- sider the parking, the septic field, the condition of the building and the needs of the fire department. Ridings said the group will not seek increased membership until the feasibility study is completed. “At the end of this exercise we may not have anything, so we don’t want to form this huge organization,” Ridings said. He hopes the project will pro- ceed. Interested community groups and individuals will be invited to join in the project, he said. A survey on the hall is being circulated in Deep Cove by the association. If the hall is restored, association members suggest it could be used by many local groups.
